Finally got our calves branded today. Still have a couple more cows to do. With the price cattle still rising and hearing about more cattle thefts, figured it would be a good idea. Also, I just thought it would be cool to brand our cows with our own brand.




Ended up with a double line under the N on this one somehow.




Here is our freezer steer for next fall. Saw in the paper that steer under 300 lbs are bringing up to $5/lbs. That is just crazy. He is probably 250-275 right now.

branding is always a good idea, your brand is only registered in your county, thieves usually travel out of county to sell

I guess that's why the chickens aren't branded

Those are fire brands, right? I hear that some use cold branding with nitrogen, is that correct?

Most people are using an electric brander nowdays. Much easier than fire and they are ready to go in 90 seconds. Yes some people are also using freeze branders but I have never used one.

Great pics, and who did the metal work for you?

Be sure to register your brand at the county clerk's office for each county where you do business. It is free but has to be renewed every 7 or 10 years. Also, consider joining Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. It's their brand inspectors at cattle auctions that catch a lot of thefts.
