I just purchased a couple of boxes of monarch 55 grain soft point ammo for my ar15 I just built and needs to be sighted in. I have a hog hunt scheduled on the 28th of this month. I was wondering if anyone has any insight on this ammo or any experiences they have had with it. I really don't want to spend a fortune on ammo sighting it in and then again buying more for the hunt so I was planning on using these monarchs for the hog hunt. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Shouldn't be a problem if your shot placement is right. I personally would use a heavier bullet and not Monarch. I would stick to at least 62gr and a brand that is a bit mess dirty. That being said I know guys what shoot 55gr Monarch and have no problems. Just my and Welcome to the Forum.

I've killed hogs and yotes with it, so you'll be fine. The key thing will be shot placement. Welcome to the forum and post pics if you shoot one.

Recently got a gym membership, strange folks! I like to show up the roid zombies with my full motion curls with the 55lb. bells. Not their cheater short stroked light weights. It's holarious.

not sure bout the soft points. Have had real good luck with cheap 55gr fmj, & been on hunts people using the 55gr hp & taken hogs. Shots taken were close range. .223 not alot of energy. Shot placement is key. Not good blood trails, small entry wounds. Best wishes on up coming hunt.

Better to check with your outfitter that you are going to..some are not allowing 223 due to many wounded and not recovered animals. Just my two cents.

I've used Monarch softpoints in .308 with good results. Once again, shot placement and wouldn't worry about the brand too much unless it's called something like "Fast Freddies Flying Lead".

Like others will say, shot placement is king. Personally, I don't think .223 is adequate for hogs. They can get too big and have too thick of skin and too much gristle and unless your hunting situation is perfectly ideal, u might not be presented with an easy shot opportunity to make a DRT neck/head shot. From my experience and from what I've seen/ heard, if u don't have that shot opportunity, your chances of recovery within an hour or two of taking that shot, with that caliber are reduced a lot. As far as that particular ammo goes, I don't have direct experience. If .223 is your only option, I've heard the 55 grain fmj are best for cheap ammo and 70 grain tsx is the best overall choice for .223. .223 can kill hogs of course and with perfect shot placement, it will do it quickly. But, other calibers/bullet selections will do it faster, and with more room for error. .
Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

Those are shoulder shots buy the way. The top and bottom hog were running wide open and I rolled them both with one shot. The Monarch .223 55 grain soft point has been tested by me. I have used it for 7 years and never have had a dud. I have shot several hundred rounds of the monarch .223 55 grain through that model 700 and 90 % of the shots were at an animals. It doesn't have selective memory, it just kills. Hogs, deer, coyotes, pesky birds, whatever. Trust me don't be scarred.

Theirs some good info in this thread. Didn't realize outfitters were trying to stay away from the .223's cause of wounded hogs running off. Tis their place, their rules. Would check an see. Most of my hunting is Public Land. Have used 30-30 & spent hours following blood trails, never found hogs. The 55gr fmj did do the job, hogs were smaller, because of small entry wound most blood went in body cavity. Found good price on the 55gr. hps, figured bigger entry wound over the fmj, again, guys hunted with, hogs didnt go far, smaller hogs. Best wishes

brass case with a 55 grain soft point about ten dollars a box last time I checked. I normally buy 10 boxes at a time. They've never failed me. I did have one dud with the fmj style one time using a rem 700, but that's about 1 in 700 rounds. I may of even got it wet and didn't know it. It may of got washed and put back onto the junk table by accident. You know keys, receipts, money, ect.

is there a difference shooting this round with an AR15 and what appears to be a bull barrell bolt action rifle?
Relative to velocity and accuracy?
Just curious.

I have shot the monarch .223 soft point in an r 15. I did have some cycling issues with the rem r15, but that gun jammed all the time with different styles of ammo. I did keep it clean. I think that it would of liked the 556 ammo pressure better. The 556 has a common muzzle velocity of 2800 fps and the .223 is usually around the 31 to 3200 fps with 55 grain projectiles. More gas can be a bad thing in some of the ARs concerning cycling reasons. Velocity wise I was shooting a rem 700 bull tactical with a 20 in barrel. Probably not much difference in guns. Maybe 100fps with a longer barrel and a bolt gun. You may loose a little gas in an auto from the action automatically sliding back and releasing pressure. That's why they get dirty so quick in the combustion chamber area. The monarch was accurate in the r15. I could shoot the top of beer bottle necks off at 200 yrds and then finish the bottom of the bottle off with another shot. That's some red neck accuracy.

Don't want to miss lead you I was shooting those beer bottles in a narrow pit that was protected by woods all around it. Helps cut down on wind. That 55 grain bullet will move pretty easy in windy conditions.
