Kroger has corned beef brisket on sale for $2.99 per pound. What can we do with it?

a while back I asked my wife to pick up a brisket for me to smoke, she came home with a corned beef brisket cause it was a lot cheaper. I went ahead and smoked it like I would normally, just a bit shorter in time due to it being very trimmed. Actually, I smoked it for about 7 hours due to a very late start and my wife tossed it in the crock pot the next morning to actually cook it. Came out awesome!

The ad said that it was point cut, whatever that means. I like corned beef and cabbage but am not sure about how to cook it. I might look it up n google.

point cut is comes from the point portion of a brisket (as opposed to the flat) which is rounder and thicker and is typically a bit fattier than the flat. I think the more traditional way of cooking is placing in a large pot, cover with water, bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to simmer for 3-6 hours depending on size. I typically smoke which is considered pastrami.

I just looked corned beef and cabbage up. You cook it a lot like a pot roast. Kroger has cabbage on sale also.

Ya might want to keep a couple of windows open and don't let the dogs in.

Bill, all I could find at New Years was point-cut. Tastes the same, cook it just like you do the flat-cut. We had our traditional New England Boiled Dinner(Corned beef and cabbage with taters and a few carrots thrown in)and black-eyed peas, and the corned beef was every bit as delicious as it ever has been. Maybe even better!

I got one while I was out yesterday. They run from 2.5 to 4 pounds. I got the smallest they had. I boiled it 3 hours and put it in the frig. The stock tasted great so I saved it. I haven't cut into it yet. I'll keep you posted.

The point cut is what I always called the cap. That's what they use to make chopped brisket sandwiches. I thin sliced enough for three to four sandwiches and sliced of enough half inch slices for a couple of meals with mixed vegetables like a pot roast.

We probably cook it a couple of times a year using the Alton Brown recipe. You can brine one yourself but it's easier to buy. We got our last one at Costco and it was really good.

Katz pastrami is amazing. That would be something to make for sure. Let us know how it turns out.

cook your cabbage and potatoes in that stock. When you get down to leftovers chop it all up and fry it for corned beef hash-goes great with eggs

Smoked corned beef = Pastrami, but ya gotta rub it down with lots of cracked coriander and black pepper before putting it on the smoker. I've done pastramis from the pre-packed corned beef and they have come out great!
