I don't Tony, when I took this photo he was less than a year old and I would guess he was in the 55-65lb range. If he's still alive next year I hope to get another photo of him.

Now y'll go back to bickering....

d.g.,

The only way we could get a reputable DNA test done was to be part of a study or reputable institution (a Jerry Springer DNA test wasn't an option :-)....hence the trade. I even offered to pay the labs but they said they are not set up to take payments, etc. So it was the path that made the most sense.

The hunter did keep the hide (but he cut off the feet as is typical for trappers and was going to give it to a friend who traps and sell fur). We finally did convinced him to do a full body mount with the feet hidden by artificial snow.

So they had to have the head? They couldn't get what they needed off some other body part? I guess if a fella really wanted to know bad enough, and had to give it up, he'd do it. What about when they're done with it?

We did not "have to" give up the skull ..we decided to because (1) it was the quickest way to get a reputable and extensive DNA analysis, (2) the skull will stays at the NC Natural History Museum in the archives for other studies and research, (3) One of the folks in VA that is involved with this animal is doing his own research study on coyotes and this whole interaction got him connected with a bunch of researchers that was beneficial and finally (4) The hunter wasn't going to mount the skull (he is doing a full body mount) and was happy to donate it in order to find out what he shot. And, the skull had tissue on it (which is what they DNA'ed,) we are supply hair samples ...but the skull is really critical when they take measurements, etc. and compare it to other specimens.

So it really was a "win win " in a sense.

I see. And I guess I could do that, lol. Not sure though...I have a LOT of animal skulls, and that one would be hard to turn loose of. But never mind all that. the guy shot an awesome animal that anyone would be proud of! Congrats to him!
