Posted this earlier in another section, without any responses, so I figured I'd try the open thread...

I've got an old ranch truck I'm looking to camo out...looking to get a good step by step from anyone that has done a successful camo job. Post any pics you have, if you guys have a minute to do so. Property is just south of Austin, thick woods for the most part. Looking to maybe park it at the edge of some fields, and do some coyote calling perhaps (has a decent roof rack).

Any help/ideas/links to threads/etc. are always welcome.

Man hope you get some reaction on your thread. Get you some flat camo paint and get creative. Maybe some dark green for the cedar bushes. Some grey and brown for those mesquite trunks and light green for the leaves. If you want a dark cedar bush just paint a solid spot and then get the cedar branch and hold it on the dark spot and then apply a lighter color like tan to the branch. The paint will hit the metal not covered by the branch. This will give you a real natural look. and so on. Practice on some card board. Be sure to let the base coat dry before you make your trees. I paint a lot of my guns this way. You can even put a little cactus plant on the bottom. Remember the plant is your pattern. You can fill in the rest with some art work.

Have you considered doing a wrap? Might be easier and less time consuming to contact a company that does that.

Haven't considered the wrap...don't really want to put any money into it...figured it'd be a fun project for the family and I to tackle. And we have loads of spray. Will contact gutit later today. Thanks!

I haven't done it, but I do have a project waiting to be camo'ed. I figure to start with a dark base coat to be the deep shadows and add three lighter colors above it using tall grass and limbs. That should give it some depth, but I have no clue if I'm right.

Hint: Take a picture of the area you hunt. Print it out in large format and then decide what your base coat will be!

On our lease the predominate rocks are light tan, the dirt is beige, and the grass usually takes on a light brown or tan hue during the majority of hunting seasons.......

Think it would work better starting with the lighter colors as the base first, then mask with foliage and spray your darker colors.

Sounds like Nat Gear camo would be perfect. It looks good on trucks and atvs in my opinion.

I camoed my blazer awhile back. All I did was buy some camo paint and call a few buddies. You can tell where each of us painted but it works. It has what you call character.

A buddy bought camo wrap and did his Jeep. Looked good, but it required some skill to apply.

Search "camouflage painting a boat for duck hunting", there are video and written tutorials on how to do it yourself.

True Story - I hunted with an Outfitter in South Dakota who had an older model Chevy Suburban he used to carry around pheasant hunter. His girlfriend (a totally hot rancher's daughter in her late 30's) painted it one afternoon using a brush and a roller..I was impressed (with her in her shorts and with the truck). She painted the whole thing a mustard color with the roller and the brush for the edges, and then used brown, gray and black paint for a camo effect. It turned out surprisingly good. I told him to marry her because he was never going to find another woman like that. They are still dating and he still has the truck!

Wraps look good but aren't durable enough for a hunting vehicle. Go muddin, or drive through low vegetation or thickets, it will get scratched and end up looking like ____.

My son wanted to paint his bedroom door camo so I helped him with it. What we did was use lighter colors first and just painted random patterns and the last thing we did was take branches with the leaves still on them and some of the branches we laid directly on the surface and some we held a few inches above the surface and spray painted the branches with black color.
After we removed the branches the overspray gave us a cool look of shadows behind the leaves and branches.
It turned really good, of coarse my son came up with all the creative ideas on how we painted it.
