Just checked the cameras today from the past few weeks. Would these be considered mature axis?

Looks like a 3 year old to me. I don't usually wait that long for them. Anything over a 2 year old I can't load by myself.

I wouldn't wait for them to grow older if it is free range. Axis tend to be wanderers.

These are free range Axis. We shot a couple two years ago but haven't seen anything since. This is the first year we've put protein out and hay year round. They've been around for two weeks now. Would you shoot?
Near Iraan and right off Pecos river.

Let him get hard horned then hit him...I live on Axis fringe area and they are very nomadic. Sometimes disappearing for a year even w protein and alfalfa out. Tips of velvet are still bulged so he still adding antler.

Thanks for the input guys. Was down there Saturday and Sunday. Ran into several both days in the same thicket just 200yds behind this feeder they're hitting so I'm guessing they're calling it home, for now. Looking at him how long do you think he is? 26-28"?

I'd say closer to 22-24" but might gain a couple when he runs out. Unless you have a good amount of axis traffic I'd pop him.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

To answer your question: Yes, they are quite mature. As free range, I'd whack 'em before they move on.
There will come a time when Axis will outnumber Whitetails in Texas.

Both bucks are very young. Teenagers. Remember, axis in the wild regularly live 12-16 years, so these 3-4yo are youngesters. But who cares, shoot em if you like em.

So checked camera again today and not as much activity as was on the previous roll. But I did notice that the alpha still is growing. Here are a few pics of him and the date they were taken. Definitely looks like he's put on a few inches! Feb 20, 2015 March 6, 2015 March 14, 2015

He has added several inches and is still growing by the looks of the last photo. He's going to be a very nice buck! Good Luck with your hunt. Baker
