Is it possible to take a smoothbore shotgun barrel and have it machined so that it's a rifled barrel? I have a left handed Remington Model 1100 and I have never been able to find any left handed rifled barrels (either from Remington or aftermarket like Hastings).


If so, does anyone know who does that type of work?

I don't know about being able to rifle a standard smooth shotgun barrel but you may call Rhino Chokes down in Florida and see about having one of their rifled choke tubes fit to it. I've had very good luck with the rifled choke tubes shooting Lightfield slugs. May be worth looking at.

I didn't realize there was any difference in a barrel a from a left hand and right handed shotgun.

Look at Carlson choke tunes, too. Was gonna get a ext'd rifled tube for the SuperNova, for the Hagerman Hog Hunt but I got in too late to get a Permit again.

1- Already have a rifled choke tube (from Remington) but wasn't that impressed.....not enough rifling to stabilize a sabot.

2- Yes there is a difference in the right hand and left hand barrels to accommodate the ejection opening on the left or right side of the receiver.

I figured I was "clutching for straws", but I thought I'd ask.

A bottom eject BPS with a rifled barrel sounds like an easier solution ...

A couple of things. A lot depends on what kind of performance you want, I believe that with the right choke and slug, you could get good performance out to about 100 yards witn a rifled choke tube, beyond that you'll need a fully rifled barrel. I have an ancient Hastings barrel that has a slower twist that was designed for Foster slugs, it doesnt work well with sabots, it does however shoot well out to 75 yds with Brenneke KO slugs. I suspect that the Remington choke might suffer from the same problem so I wouldn't automatically dismiss a rifled choke from another manufacturer.

Appreciate all the comments.......so here is what I did/have:

1. When I couldn't find a rifled barrel I went to the Remington rifled choke.....I can shoot Remington sluggers pretty well out to 75-80 yards...they shoot well and they do make a big hole.

2. I have a TCProhunter....so I bought the 20 gauge rifled 28" SS barrel ... I can shoot 3" Federal slugs out to 200 yards accurately...that's the gun I usually hunt with.

3. I do like my Left Handed 1100 as it has sentimental value and I had the stock cut down for a really good fit. I have multiple barrels .....and I was just looking to get greedy and see if I could figure a way to get a fully rifled barrel to go with what I have.

So it looks like finding/getting a fully rifled barrel is not in the cards. I was hoping that there was a shop that could rifle one of my smooth bore barrels.

Thanks for the lead, but it's a rifled choke not a fully rifled barrel. In fact, I bought one from Remington about 2-3 years ago. I haven't tried all the various shotgun sabots, but so far I was not impressed with the rifled choke.

Since I do not see a post on rifling an existing shotgun barrel, here goes.

I think it would not work very well since the barrel is already at bore dimension, cut rifling into that size pipe and the groves become larger than the projectile. Add to that the barrels are not very thick to begin with rifling would only make the barrel thinner.

I don't know if anyone can or will, rifle a smooth-bore shotgun barrel. May have something to do with the wall thickness as kmon1 stated.
As you're finding out, the rifled choke tube will help stabilize to some extent, but you're best bet is the track you're heading on - a rifled barrel.
My experience has been that with the right projectile, the rifled barrel can be Minute-of-deer out to 150-200 yards. I think you're going to be stuck just buying a barrel after-market to get what you're after. But, should you find someone that will rifle one, let us know. There's bound to be some others that wouldn't mind getting one if the cost is less than finding a rifled barrel out on the market.

Bbear, no one make s an after market Left handed Rem 1100 barrel..that's the problem.

Sounds like another gun option might be the only way. I hate it when one of my goofy ideas won't come to fruition.
