i've called up a lot of critters, but last evening was the first Red Fox. In addition to that spinning feathered thingy, I was using a distressed baby puppy sound and here came the fox. Absolutely beautiful fox. It was super interested, but would not get closer than 15 yards from the caller. If I had been thinking fast enough, I could have videoed it. I keep forgetting about the camera.

Weather was perfect, as was the wind, but that's all that showed up till it was very dark. A big owl swooped out of the trees and landed next to that twirly feathered thingy and was apparently deciding whether or not to kill and eat it. Decided to just observe, then flew off.

OK, get specific. Is it a spinning feathered thingy or a twirly feathered thingy? Just joshing, the owls are always interesting. Next time remember the camera....

Well, I had the camera, but it's a hand-me-down from the wife and I haven't used it much. I tried to video that fox, so I really was thinking about it, but didn't get it done. Dang it. So this afternoon I played with that camera for half an hour and I can video with it now.

I think that twirly feathered thingy is something I bought from Primos. I think. Works pretty good sometimes. I mean it always works, but sometimes the critters just have to see what that darn thing is. It sure brought in a few big bucks during the season, when I was coyote hunting. The bucks were fascinated by it.

I have known people to hang a white/light colored feather by a thread when varmint calling, seems to catch the critters attention. Happy you got the video working.. Chances are you will see enough to make it worthwhile.

The first varmit I ever called in was a red fox.
Before cell phones, before DVD's, maybe even back when only doctors had pagers.

I had a screaming rabbit on cassette tape. After a deer hunt I put it in the player in the truck, opened the door so it was louder, and sat down under a tree right next to the truck.
Wasn't even three minutes and a red fox came in charging. He saw me under the tree and stopped but it was too late. I'd seen him coming and I bowled him over backwards with my S&W model 1500 in 30.06.
Now days I have an electronic call with a remote control, weeeeeeeeeee.
And an electronic whirly thingy. But I don't use it. Cuz it's been my experience that a turkey feather tied to a long twig shoved in the ground at an angle is superior to the electronic twirly thing. Gotta use a smaller, lighter feather when the wind is low. Just my humble redneck opinion based upon my humble redneck experiece.

Cheers
