New to hunting, so this will be my documenting thread! We got access to about 200 acres on the Red River and are wanting to eradicate as many hogs as possible.

Went out to the land today. Didn't see anything, but the game cams picked them up! Looks like we have the hogs coming in like clock work. Almost everyday 6-8am and 6-8pm. See if we can get something next weekend!

Just remember the water is not necessarily the border you may be crossing into Oklahoma. http://www.texasmonthly.com/content/drawing-line

We decided to go out to the land again Sunday and chance our luck. No hogs, but we were walking and spying the River. About 200 or so yards out saw a coyote running full speed down the river through brush. Everyone raised their guns and I had him in my sites. No one took a shot, so I decided to. Probably a terrible idea because it wasn't a very clean shot and I missed. I felt like a dick, because as we all know after a shot, you're probably not going to see anything again for some time. I just got a little trigger happy. frown

Being trigger happy is ok for your first few times out lol. I started hunting when I was about 16 and those first 2-3 years were brutal. I missed like 5 deer because I would just aim for a body part and shoot. Didn't know any better, I'm the first hunter in my family. Now I'm 30 and have a hog under my belt and 6-7 deer and have basically taught myself everything about hunting with a little help along the way. My advice is to read up on the animals you want to pursue. Read up on how to field dress and properly take care of the meat along with where to aim on an animal so you have a quick humane kill. With practice you'll be as addicted as the rest of us on here. up

Slinging some lead is part of the fun and it makes your firearm lighter.

Thanks guys. They all seemed completely fine with it, they were just surprised I took the shot.

Bringing this out to the land Saturday. Hopefully it brings us plenty of meat!

Good advice for every hunter, new or old: Be fanatical about safety. Better that you're a bit over-cautious than not.

Got out to the land yesterday. Put up the new blind and set it up. Need to add some brush around it still. About 7:50pm had what we believe was the razorback come in on the backside game trail. Only one of us was facing that way. We just use hunting lights, no night or thermal yet. He took the shot and is fairly sure hit the hog, but it took off. We looked for about 45 minutes, but came up empty. Oh well, until next time here are some pics from this weekend.

Hog down. Buddy shot it at our place. One shot with a .270 and it ran about 40 yards.

Thinking 215lbs. Didn't have a good spot to hang him all the way off the ground. With his butt and legs still on the ground we hit 200lbs.

First take down I've had. Pretty exciting. We were only out of the truck for 15 minutes before shots rang out!!!

So we have been baiting pretty rigorously, and it's paying off from the pics we pulled last night. I'll be pulling an all nighter tonight to see if we can get a few. We bait two places regularly; a game trail and our feeder. Here are some pics from this week:

Game Trail:

Feeder:
