I'm interested in possibly joining so I can extend my hunting season. I am wondering how the trials are set up and do you run in braces or does each dog compete against itself, time, etc. Thanks in advance!

I do and it is a great sport but to be competitive your dog needs to be very well broke and there is a big learning curve for the handler as well. We see a lot of new guys try it and a few of them stick with it and get addicted just like me. It is a sport for the committed.

Bill Oxner will help you out, he's been competing in NASTRA for years
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Well broke, as in steady to wing and shot? No they can go when the bird goes. They can even go when the bird leaves its nesting place. It's a lot of fun. I competed for 15 years and had two champions. Judging is also fun and NSTRA needs more judges. You run 30 minute braces, and are scored on birds pointed as well as retrieved. You also get one score for a back, your coverage, and obedience. There's a trial in Corsicana this weekend. Take you dog out there to run after the trial Saturday.

We've got a 4 region challenge with the top 8 dogs from all 4 regions running south of Corsicana Tx this weekend then a regular open trial in Priddy the following weekend. Anyone is welcome to. One out and check it out!

Took my dog to a few. Steady to wing, retrieves to hand (or dang close), backs, and you can keep the dog in the bird field, is what your looking for to run in NSTRA. You will see all different levels of dogs, and a lot of people having fun. As long as your dog does not take out the other dogs birds repeatedly its all fun.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Just found out we need dogs to fill the trial in Priddy next weekend. We're short 6 dogs so if any of you want to try your hand it'd be a great time to do it!

My setter is steady to wing and will honor from a mile away if she can see the other dog. Manners wouldn't be a problem for her. I live in Wichita Falls, but I've got people coming from all over this weekend to pick up puppies, so I couldnt make this weekends trial for sure. I'd like to come see one though, for sure.
