I have hunted Rios for many years and have several decoys. I have only hunted Rios. My son likes to turkey hunt so I have a few road trips lines up this spring... New Mexico, Missouri, Louisiana and Kansas so he can try and pop a few birds.
Question.... how important is it that the decoys be the right species of turkey we are hunting. I had not thought a lot about this until I recently saw a new decoy I liked and Bass Pro had it in Merriam and Rio Grande.

Good question. I really only Eastern hunt in VA & brought them to TX last few years. The Rios didn't seem to notice a thing.

Doesn't matter. Use the decoys you have, they will work

Turkey's aren't racists. They'll come to just about ANY turkey decoy you put out. I've hunted here in Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Missouri, Mississippi and Kansas. In every one, they at least showed an interest in a hen decoy. They didn't care that the decoy was a 'copy' of a Rio or whatever.
Take 'em and have fun.

That's what I figured. Just seeing different species of decoys offered and this being a special hunt for my kiddo.... I'm trying to cover all my bases.

I figured out a new tactic last year. Unfortunately it was the last day of the season before I figured it out. The Toms kept coming to the call. They would start gobbling 00 yards out and gobble right up until they busted out into the open, of course just out of range. Done! Nada! they would just stop. Well I figured it out. Late season and they were tired of fighting. I had a jake decoy in with the hen decoys. They just wanted an easy piece of hen and didn't wish to fight for it. So I moved the jake 30 yards out on the opposite side of where I thought the Toms would come out. Done deal, they walked right on in.

So based on discussion above there is really no need to go out and spend buku money on Avian X or Dave Smith decoys to replace my cheap Deltas from Academy?
Thanks

If you can afford them and have the love of turkey hunting, then, yes, I think they are worth the upgrade. By no means does it mean that you can't harvest turkeys unless you use high end decoys. Only you can decide if its worth it to you or not.

I took an Eastern in Missouri, used an old decoy the LO had, it was so old it had no color and had so many holes in it it was crazy. It still worked even being past it's life span. In fact, the 1st 2 days I wouldn't use it for the shape it was in, used it the 3rd day and had 4 birds on it 20 minutes after daylight, go figure.

The pretty decoys are for selling to hunters. Does a hormone driven bird brained male care how she looks if she is willing

Good philosophy. Not just for turkeys either.

Many years ago we decided to do a test on Home Made Turkey Decoys before the season started because we wanted to film the results. We used a Football & Basketball Painted them to look like hens. One of us was a good artist. We could not believe what we filmed. Both the Sports Balls were USED by the Toms. Then 2 days later we blew up some Black Plastic Bags different sizes tied a knot so the air would not escape did not paint them. We used a Rubber Band to attach a stick to hold the bags in the ground. A slight wind was blowing and so there was movement. We laughed so hard at the action that was going on and trying to keep from being heard. We were well hidden.
So I guess if it looks like a Turkey and sounds like a Turkey it must be a Turkey in the eyes of the beholder.

My decoys are like 12 years old and have a Tom decoy about 2 years old. They still work.
To be determined

I had 12 toms give my Jake and hen deke a look yesterday and never came within 60 yards. Only one hen liked them. Guess too early or something up here. Hardly any gobbling either when coming in.
