Taking my 8 year old son out in the morning to try for a couple of rabbits, squirrel, on LBJ Grasslands... Questions: I have a hunting license, which i've heard is all i need out there at LBJ Grasslands and using a shotgun for small game, and will be wearing Hunting Orange, so think i'm good there, but had a few questions below, for anyone with some generous info, for a newbie 1. If i show in up early in AM is it ok to shoot at night if i see a rabbit on a main road on grasslands, or have to wait till sunup? 2. I don't have a dog yet for rabbit hunting, any tips for a newbie looking for small game, better to cruise down roads looking for them, or go down walking trails? 3. would best time hunting rabbits be during timeframe of i'm guessing first 2 hours after sunup? 4. Any certain units better than others for finding rabbits? Any tips appreciated for someone just looking for some small game on grasslands, taking my 8 year old son, just for some fun walking around and hunting small game. If we get at least 2 or more, we will be happy, just thought i would put out a post to better our odds

Me and a few buddies rabbit hunt the grasslands about twice a week with beagles we usually hunt from about 9 am till noon or 1 you wont see many rabbits on the trails you have to get into the brambels. If you post when your gonna go we may be able to meet you some where and let you and your son hunt behind the dogs

Always wondered about rattlesnakes down there when hunting rabbit dogs. I've got 9 beagles up here in VA & get one bit by copperheads about every 4 years (training during the summer months). Is that a big issue in TX?

How did the hunt go? I'm pretty sure hunting hours for rabbits & small game is 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunrise. I hunt rabbits a lot and don't use a dog. You might be able to spook some walking on trails, but your best bet is to get into the brush. I've shot rabbits all throughout the day, but seem to have best luck in the late afternoon.
