I have a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 scope and I am buying rings/bases. At first I was going to buy 20 MOA bases, but now I am reading that some people have problems zeroing at 100 yards with 20 MOA bases, all shots go high even after cranking all the way down.

Anyone ever run into this problem using 20 MOA bases?

I think most tactical style scopes have plenty of adjustment. It will also help that the pst have a 30mm tube. You'll be fine with that scope, also make sure you get the lowest rings as possible.

that scope has 75moa total elevation. Shouldn't be a problem.

That scope is designed to be mounted on a 20 MOA base so that you have all the built in usable travel. If it won't zero at 100 yards, call Vortex, because something is wrong.

I have the 6-24x PST and it rides on a 7 Rem Mag and 7mm-08, both with 20 MOA bases, and both let it zero at 100 yards without issue.

this was a discussion in previous threads check the height of the manufacturer as you can probably get away w low-= not sure why without additional info that you need a 20 moa base the 4 -16 viper is a 600 yard scope at best and not intended for use w long range as the glass other than a clear day will fragment good for targets not precision

Huh? What is your preferred scope and power for "long range" shooting?

In the manual for that scope Vortex recommends the use of a 20 moa rail and for ranges to 800 yards. The range would also be dictated by what cartridge and bullet you are using.

In the Q&A on their webpage that question is answered

words are important it actually says if shooting distances beyond 800 yards use a 20 moa rail "Note: If shooting at distances in excess of 800 yards with 4–16x50 or
6–24x50 models, Vortex Optics recommends use of a 20 MOA canted
Picatinny rail or 30 mm rings with adjustable offsets. These can be
purchased through companies such as Badger Ordnance, Barrett Mfg.,
EGW, Burris, and others" so I will stand by statement that for precison shooting the 4-16 x 40-50 is a 600 yard scope the glass

please define long range - the viper quality of that glass under other high noon sunlight to hit steel will work sure 1000 yards - but would choose a better tool to do a better job Razor hd gen 2

Pass me some of what you're smoking.

What does "the wording" say about the Viper 6-24 power? Because I have used it to shoot 1760 yards a.k.a. one mile.

Sure the Vortex Razor is a higher quality scope. It's also more than twice as expensive and much heavier. The Viper 4-16X is a good dual purpose scope, both for hunting and shooting a thousand yards and beyond.

Which is precisely why I don't ask questions in a post anymore. You have to deal with too many answers from people that just spit out what they read on SnipersHide or some place. I PM a select few members who I feel know what they are talking about.

No. Your suggestion that a Vortex Viper 4-16x50 is not s good scope past 600 yards, blasphemy! I've got the Viper PST
6-24x50 and run it around 14-16 power at 500yds, even in low light it works well. I'm just saying, you like to talk about the Vortex Razor and how good it is, then post up your "accuracy" shots at 1000yds!

Have fun with the Trijicon guys

so you set your scope magnification at 14-16 power for 500 yards Thank you for supporting my opinion that 16x is generally good for <600 yards -
