I'm getting on a deer lease in motley county just east of northfield... South west of Childress by about 30 miles... How's the hunting in this area? Mike deer?

One of the guys we used to hunt with had a place near Roaring springs in the shinnery country. He killed big deer every year back then. This was in late '90s though. Not sure if it's that way these days.

deer hunting has been painfully slow, we have prolly 65/35 mulie to wt , on 9000 acres. Deer hunting was just very very very slow this year. I wouldn't be in motley if not for the convience as it is close to house. Sonoras numbers are the difference.

I'd take Motley any day. Lots of rain this year made the hunting tough. I've hunted both areas of the state. What Motley lacks in numbers it more than makes up for in quality. Plus Mulies and can be fantastic quail hunting. But hey, that's just me.

So what size of antlers could I expect on a well managed property?

145-160 range with occasional 170+. No comparison on antler size and body size compared to Sonora. Lots more numbers of deer in Sonora, and some bucks in this size category, but not the norm.

We had a lot of rain in the rolling plains this year so the hunting was slow but the deer were there. We've seen most of our bucks this year in Feburary.

No disrespect PP, but I have to disagree with your "what to expect" numbers, especially for the specific area the OP is asking about.

My take is that unless the said property is BIG or has some big, low pressure neighbors; the average mature buck is going to be in the 125-145 range. Yes, there will be the occasional big ones; but they are not the norm, and certainly cannot be "expected." That is just the genetics of the area.

What you see on the Pitchfork is not "normal" for the area. You are seeing the result of a very large piece of prime property with great genetics and extremely low hunting pressure. Even there, the percentage of mature bucks over [a true] 145" is VERY low.

That is not necessarily the case with the area that the OP is talking about. In general, numbers are low and pressure is high. This "best kept secret" area of the state has been discovered, and the pressure is taking its toll (think Pike County, IL, Kansas, Shackelford County, etc.)

Still a great area to hunt, but the realities must be realized...

No disrespect taken. Have not hunted the area he mentioned in about 10 years, so I'll admit it could of changed since then. But I have hunted the Pitchfork for 8 years and your way off on your perception of the type of bucks we have on average. up

I have been in that country hunting for 10 years now and it's hit and miss depending on the property your hunting in relation to pressure and of course, rainfall. You can kill 170" type deer in this country, which is what I call "Opportunity", which is all you can ask for, but, conditions have to be right and you can't expect this on a place where you have 1 hunter every couple hundred acres. Every year I have hunted in this region, including drought years, I have had opportunities to shoot age appropriate bucks over 145" which ain't bad if you know a thing about deer hunting. Good country, but like anywhere, you have to be dealt the right hand in order to cash in on big bucks.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Guys that haven't hunted the panhandle last several years don't really understand what the drought has done to some of those areas. Between the drought and overloaded on hunters those good places up there are getting very rare. Most of those ranches don't do well with much hunting pressure like where most are used to hunting.

The place I'm looking at backs up to the pease river so I was hoping that would bring in more wildlife

Are the whitetail numbers good closer to the river as well?
