I have never setup a feeder pen before and looking for some help/ideas I am on my first lease and going to setup a feeder with a pen. Yes, there are cows on the lease My question is, how high do my panels need to be, and how many panels/t-posts would I need? I want this to work for hog as well as deer My idea is, cut out a few spots on the bottom for hogs to come in during off deer season, then be able to close those openings when it gets close to deer season I thought about cutting the openings, but leave them attached to the panel and "fold" them up, then I can close them come deer season to help keep the hogs out Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Make in a circle, 30 ft across min., use hog panels (about 34" high), this is about 6 panels 7 better, each panel will have a T post in middle and one at each end for the next panel to tie off to. There have been other threads on here about this discussion.

Hog panels will work for most cows, we build ours with minimum 9 panels. The "hog gate" concept you are talking about will work fine. Deer will use them too.

My thought is the hog gates will be more trouble than their worth, having them fail during deer season. I would just make a hog tube when you want to start hunting hogs, and stake it out on the other side of your stand.
My experience is once hogs get to know there is feed in that pen, and they've been in once before - they will be very "persistent" in then trying to find a way in. But if they are initially thwarted, they tend to not try as hard.

YOu can alos use goat wire. It is not as strong on the bottom as panels but a combo of both with maybe a panel on each end or each quarter give you an opening to back a truck into for filling if you need that. Whatever you do, leave a truck size opening for when you need it. I also always found a spot that I could incorporate several tree trunks instead of all t-posts. That saves some money and makes it more natural to deer when trees are around.

I have added addition posts with 2 wires 4' exterior to keep our horses and cattle away from pen. They constantly tried to push it in. Apart from deer season I remove 1 panel for hogs

I used hog panels before and our bull got in and tore everything up. He was in it most of a day. It was very dry and he was very hungry. Nothing to eat at that time. I'm glad he got out and didn't die from heat.

hog panels will keep cows out. build it as big as you can. I'd recommend at least 10 panels if possible. I build mine with 12-14, and have one with 20. I keep a protein feeder and at least one corn feeder in each one. I've found that the bigger you make it, the more deer will stay around it eating without feeling crowded.
what you can do is lay your panels out on the ground flat in somewhat of a circle. start knocking in the first T-post, and just start putting the panels up as you go. put a t post roughly every 8 feet for the best stability. Just prop the panel up against the tposts one at a time. I'd also recommend slightly overlapping the panels by a few inches and tie off so they can't be split apart. don't try to put all the tposts up and then go put panels up... it will never match up just right.
for hogs, I have two feeder pens with an extra corn feeder that I put right on the edge of the feed pen. I have it set up where the corn will be thrown outside the pen, and the hogs come by, but can't get under the feeder itself. you might even look at putting a directional feeder that will throw all the corn outside the feeder pen for the pigs.
