Their service rep told me lapping is NEVER needed for their rings. Im talking about the ones split vertically that miht directly to the receiver. For $75 they better be good.

If you lap Badger Ordinance rings it voids the warranty. Dont know if that's the case with Talley.

No lapping needed for Tally rings and Burris rings but definitely needed for Weaver, Leupold and other rings. In my experience Tally and Burris are perfectly concentric on the inside of the ring where the scope is supported but not so with other rings.

I lap them all, that being said I used a lot of Leupy and they seemed pretty good on the bottom but the caps always needed help. The burris 6 holes weren't bad, and neither were the SWFA brand that looks identical to the Burris. I think it's mainly the coating that's applied to the rings. I will say none of my scopes have ring marks, and none have event slipped in the rings after proper torquing. The Nikon P-223 were garbage, they required a lot of lapping

Creates a more complete contact surface and aligns the rings.

The Talley's are stout and I think nice compliment to the look of a good rifle, other than that not sure about benefits. Have a set of fixed rings/bases on a Marlin 1894 that have been working well for a couple years. Fixin to get a set for my model 70.

You want the mating surface inside the ring to the scope tube to be a straight line, and not in an arc.

And as the photo Q.S.Y.B posted, you want front ring to be aligned with back ring. Quality rings won't make ring marks on a scope tube since it is two parrallel pieces of metal touching each other for the full length of the ring. "Lapping" is basically just like sanding wood, but you're lightly sanding away metal. And the lapping tool prevents you from getting out of alignment.

At least that's how I understand it all. Never have had to lap my own rings.

I have ran Talleys on many different rifles..
The lightweights are my go to for a new hunting rifle.
I have used their Sako dual dovetail rings and the 30 and 34mm tactical rings
Never a problem whatsoever.

I love their stuff and Gary Turner is a good guy.
I feel good about doing business with them.

I have a set, if I was going to use them they would require some lapping.

Same here. My Talleys are lapped.
