whats some of you members advice on reloading for AR,S. AM FAIRLY new to reloading bout 3 years now, have had good luck on 270,308, and 280 loads for bolt guns . am wanting to start reloading for my two AR 15 5.56/223 rifles and me and my uncles AR 10,S we got for hog hunting. first do i need small base dies for sure,I already have set of FL dies in 308, which is what me and uncle larrys AR 10,S are chambered in. Would like to use them if u can, have no dies for 223, so would it be best to go ahead and get small base dies for it, also do I need to crimp, I did no crimp on some 308,s I reloaded and so far they seem to fire great out of my AR 10. the brass was new so I don,t know yet how my fl dies will work in them. NEXT I have a good supply of 55 grain hornady SP,S in factory load would this be a good all purpose bullet for preditor hunting, and maybe work on a hog that passes by when am after yotes and cats, if I am hog hunting I will have my AR 10 or like caliber bolt gun, just want a bullet that will work maybe a bit better than a pure varmen bullet. I intend to reload this hornady brass as I use it, can get the 55 grain SP,S at midway in bulk for what seems a good deal, also if I use small base dies on 223 will they still work well in my 223 bolt rifle a marlin x 7, Any advice yal old time reloaders have would be helpful and thanks in advance

I doubt you will need small base dies. But size up some cases and make sure they chamber fine. If they chamber fine, you are good. Same with 223, prob not needed. Crimping for a 223 and 308 gas gun is ok. Just make sure your case are all the same lengths for an even crimp. If you have enough neck tension on the 308, it may not need a crimp. 55 grain SP are good for all around use.

thanks chad as said I have fired the 308 reloads with new brass, and they have feed and grouped well, I was impressed with the grouping of the AR 10,S run right in there with my bolt guns, I will see how 308,s progesse sounds like I need to trim cases on 223 to same length. then get my crimp point, is the SP on the ammo stand for soft point or spiral point heard them refered to as both thanks. and as for bullets in 308 have got great results with gamekings and SST,S both awesome bullets that have been tight grouping , and good terminal performance.

spire point and soft point are king of the same thing. Yes, you can crimp with the seating die. When setting the die up, set it up for the crimping first, and then adjust your seating depth (kind of at the same time, but work the crimp first).

My top two are CFE 223 (for 55 grain) and AR Comp (for 75 and up). IMR 4198 is the most accurate out of my weapon but it's a trickle only powder IMO. CFE 223 meters like water while AR Comp is okay if you don't mind a small variation every charge. I weigh each charge of AR Comp before putting it in the case because I want max accuracy.

I posted an extensive test report not too long ago.
