I've noticed ducks start pairing up in December. The ducks on our lease don't start coming in till after the split, I'd gladly move it back two more weeks  The reason they like to end the season before February is that ducks start to pair up.
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.
