Any ideas on a good spotting scope for the wife. All she needs it for is birds and boats.

Budget?

As is the case with lots of things you get what you pay for, and the better the glass quality the more it costs.

Is $500 high low or in the ballpark?

They aren't cheap, but I recommend Kowa, and I recommend this vendor: http://www.creedmoorsports.com

I'm mightily impressed with my Brunton. I recently picked up a 1k spotting scope for a song ($300). Shoot me a pm and I'd be happy to tell you the source.
