We are picking up our new puppy this Saturday. And was wondering if I should change up the food that I've been feeding our dogs. I guess I was questioning because the 1st dog that I had since I've been out from my parents( and that a long time).passed away 3 weeks ago and all I ever fed her was science diet and a can of alpo. Thats not a cheap low end food. She was just 9,1/2. Growing up all our dogs died of old age it seamed ( at least 16/18 range) my parents bought the cheapest dog food they could find. My labs are not going to run any competitions. They are spoiled house pets that go hunting. I know the food didn't cause her death but I can't see that it help her either. ( the vet didn't know either )
What are some pro and cons to some of the food out there? My 83lb chocolate lab is 2,1/2 yrs and eats 1 can of alpo and 5 cups of science diet. The breeder has the 8 wk old puppy eating diamond natural.

I'd start off with a sack of what the breeder is feeding and switch later if you think you have to switch.

Sage advice unless you like cleaning up the runs. Diamond makes a good puppy food.

+1. A switch this soon just adds more stress on the pup.

Real good advice...give us more. What adult food do you feed? My Lab will be like Moe's. Lots of exercise but probably no daily, hard, stressful, training like a trial or a test dog.

Dang sure don't wanting her to get fat like me !!!

Yes. We have already bought a 20lb bag of diamond puppy food. I was thinking more in the lines of another month or two. Best to Keep the same. Switch to what my other lab is on or change both to another all together?

If I were you I would feed what the guy is feeding. Then when you want to switch blend the 2 feeds together a little at a time until you are on the food you are going to feed all the time. Keeps it from being a real big shock to the digestive tract. I fed Diamond Performance to all my trial dogs. I think it ran 30-20 in protein and fat .

Depends on each dog.

Like what's already been said, make a gradual switch if you do.

Victor, purina pro plan, 4health, taste of wild, Dr. Tims, and more are commonly recommended brands.

I'm not a fan of science diet (disclaimer * no first Hand experience). I've looked into it and it's ingredients and can't figure out what justifies its cost or sets it apart. I believe vet offices get a kickback too.

Just another option for you to consider is Dr Tims brand. His Kinesis line is an all age food, and even picky dogs gobble it up. You can get it online with free shipping to your door at chewy.com. The older labs get 3 cups a day. The young, active dog gets 3 cups of Pursuit line. That's cheaper and better than giving them more of a different brand. (Won't be needing to feed 5 cups and alpo)

What I like about it is it has a higher calorie content, and you save money because you feed less. Not a lot of fillers either with most of their protein from animal source. You can also email the company, and he gives you prompt personal responses. Like having a dog nutritionist on call. He's helped me with questions a few times with my pup who has a mildly sensitive stomach.

There are lots of good foods out there. Do research on what dogs need, shouldn't have, and watch how your dog responds (coat, energy, stools, etc) and go from there. I used to not think quality dog food was needed because "my dogs are fine." I switched when they got older and saw tremendous difference.

I'd give up or not start on the canned food if the pup is a good eater. Play in by ear.

Don't you feed "puppy" food for the first year, or am I thinking of a TV commercial?
