What's everyone's tried and true methods to picking out a pup? I've got a litter on the ground and I can't for the life of me decide on which one I'm going to keep for myself. They're all fairly bold pups and all within a few ounces of one and other size wise. I really thought one would stand out above the crowd and it'd be easy!

I pick the pointer with the shortest if all other things are about equal. I didn't get to pick from Crackers litter. I don't like her tail but they're home to stay when I bring them home with me. One may step up later. Get the one that looks best to you.

Usually I pick a short coupled dog with a high tail set unless I get chosen by another. I also like a dark orange eye and no knot head looking dogs. Good square head. That is for pointers.

Had this same situation last summer ducked up. Nine new pups on the ground last July 14. I was hoping to be able to get them in birds this yr. so I went into overtime working thru them last summer and fall.
Eight females and one male in the litter. I kept the male and wound up keeping 2 of the females that I felt showed the most enthusiasm for the game. I've always felt like you can't train desire into a dog. So that's the number one thing I look for.
A few pics from training right out into the field . All three of these pups turned out to be more than I could have hoped for with multiple finds on coveys and singles.
The male found pointed and held 4 coveys after 4 o'clock on the last hunt of the yr.
good luck . Should be a fun summer for you!

Maybe some breeders can give you the name of puppy evaluation test, I forget what the specific name of an aptitude test is.

It may help you with temperament, but not with which one will be the better bird finder.
Take them pups to a field a few times, and watch them work.
Introduce birds to them together, and separately. One or more should steal your heart.

I think all of them have already stolen his heart. Start out by naming them.

It easier if you put different color collars on them. Then just call them the color of the collar. You start naming them, and they will be with you for life.

I prefer females.
Bold and aggressive seems a plus.
Some folks talk about large pads, larger noses, chest width.
I don't know about that, pups change as they grow.

But I like to spend some time with them. Seems like there's always one that wants to bond with me.

That's my girl.

I went with the colored color route to avoid becoming too attached or show favoritism towards one or the other. They're all known as a color. I'm going to take them out to the pasture and sit back and watch.

I have had success picking the runt, picking the aggressive one, picking the one that was most independent or picking the one that is whitest, I have all so had success with just having the breeder pick me one. At six weeks it is a real shot in the dark.
My success is directly related to the time I spend with the dog.

Bingo. I pick a good litter, and then I get the one that looks the best to me. Complete crap shoot. IMO.

I like an evenly marked head in a pointer.
