The first piece of land that I had access to hunt on had some serious poaching/trespassing. It was only 50 acres, but it was a natural funnel for deer, and deer highways were present throughout. After posting private property signs on the barbed wire fencing and property border trees, we would still catch people coming and going on the property constantly. Being only 50 acres it wasn't hard to start scouring the property to find where they were coming in at. After identifying their entrance areas we started looking for stands and equipment. There were multiple stands on the property that were brand new, as well as trail cameras, feeder pipes, and a Mathews bow. Yes, one stand location had a bow hanging in the tree, maybe the guy went home for lunch and was planning on coming back later, I don't know.

So we removed every stand, camera, feeder pipe and the one bow. In their places we left private property signs and a laminated sheet of paper. The paper informed them that they had a limited amount of time to claim their property. If they chose to claim their property, there would be no strings attached other than them having to meet us and we would gladly give their property back to them. If they chose not to claim their property, it would be handed over to the game warden and they could get it from him if they still wanted it. Doing it this way allowed everybody to introduce themselves, for us to meet our neighbors in a non confrontational situation, and to let them know the property was being attended.

Some items were never claimed, others we're claimed within 24 hours, but since we did this the poaching has become stagnant.

It seems to have worked for us, maybe it can work for you, who knows.

Awfully generous of you. Glad it has worked for you, can't say I'd be that nice.

Wise move to try the nice way first.
Lets them know that you mean to enforce it, without starting a nasty and long running battle.

Glad it worked out for you. I "played nice" a couple of times in the past. Then one of my local GWs told me that was the WRONG path to take, need to set the tone. He said habitual tresspasers don't care about others feelings/properties/rights, so why should I forgive them. And, he said if you let someone off easy, they are more likely to test you again. Amazingly enough, the first time I actually pressed charges (which I allowed to be reduced to simple trespass from felony trespass) I havent seen any further signs of a problem. That was a few years ago. All my neighbors know if they need to get on my place for a wounded deer, missing cow, whatever, just pick up the phone FIRST. We all have each others gate combos. Although the problems I was having in the past wasn't from owners, it was their leasors.

Thank you...thank you very much

Noticed that too, they must be cheap blush

Glad you have it solved, for now. I tend to believe folks that have the brain to do that stuff, end up doing it again. If I had elected to handle it that way, the note I left would read more like.

" My place cost $750 per day to day lease, you spent at least one day placing equipment and one day hunting, so please bring $1500 when picking up your equipment. For future hunts, I will require prior notice and cash up front. Thank you, have a nice day"

Maybe other folks just have a higher class of poacher than what I am used to seeing.

I've 'played nice' before with a neighbors Son. It only emboldened him further. Destroyed feeders, etc. Finally had enough and called the Sheriff...No more problems...Yet.

May actually be a good plan. I think the reason most of the people do what they do as far as trespassing/poaching is because no one knows who they are or what they have done. Once you see them face to face, know who they are and have a record of the incident, it would make it much easier to prosecute in the future, and they have the shame of being caught.

I think it would be easier to prosecute later "IF" you at least had the SO, or GW give them a talking too, or verbal warning. Let them off with little record of it and a judge/ defense attorney may ask you " why was it not a big enough deal the 1st time, but now you want to prosecute?"

Personally, I can see just warning a kid 14 years or so and under, but over 18 up and adult, they know better...

If an 8 year old doesn't know better they better be a special needs child or they are going to have a hard life.

Agree, just know young folks sometimes lack the control needed.
