Would anyone like to share detailed info on the capabilities of hounds in tracking. Looking for some brilliance, tenacity, perseverance. Do you have a success story about an extremely difficult (with not a lot of hope) but successful tracking of an exotic.

Welcome to the forum. You might want to post the same question on the gun dog forum. You'll more likely to get a straight answer over there.

The exotic that I would be interested in tracking would be an African Sulcata tortoise in Manor TX.

Thadius was a 10+year old African Sulcata tortoise, Stolen from his heated "hooch" behind my garage in an enclosed, gated yard, on Thursday, February 12, 2015. I live outside of Manor City Limits, 12-15 miles outside of Austin, tx. He is about 50 lbs, over a foot long and about a foot wide. We had him for almost 10 years, he is older than 10. He has a bare spot on the inside of his front right leg, a dip on the sloping end of his top shell behind his crown, and a chip in his beak. He was a free ranging tortoise, and we have been looking frantically for him. I have notified everyone in Manor, called, email, texted and sent pictures to everyone from San Antonio, Lakeway, Killeen, and Bryan, tx. I also wrote a Florida and California company. If anyone has any information, please do not hesitate to call me. There appears to be an epidemic of Sulcata thieves, as mentioned by tortoiserescue who wrote me and said they will be sending out press releases regarding the thefts. Thadius was healthy when he was stolen. He is missed, and we are violated and saddened by our loss.
Sorry, not interested in the purchase of a new Sulcata, we just want Thadius back. Thanks.

Dogcatcher, I was informed that tortoise are about as smart as a "dumb" dog. What about tracking them with a hound.

Should've put turtle in the title, when we hear exotic, we think animals like axis deer, blackbuck antelope etc. Welcome to THF

The link I gave you was for a guy that has a wounded deer tracking dog. he might be able to answer the questions you have about tracking the lost turtle. Most of us will have no clue and don't care if a dog can track the lost turtle, but some will be able to you give you other advice.

John, maybe one of your vizslas is like my female vizsla. When I run the dogs over the summer, she finds box turtles, and brings them to me. I pet her and tell her good girl, then she tears off to find more. The most she's found in one morning run is five.
If I lived closer I would run her for you, just on the off chance that the turtle is still close by.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Two of my wifes turtles live in an outside enclosure and currently hibernating. Another large testudo tortoise is inside till I finish a new bigger landscaped pen for her. My wife has used Blaze for years to find them when hidden or to find where they are hibernating. The problem with sulcata tortoises is that they do not hybernate and require a hutch or doghouse that is heated or out of the cold. If their turtle escaped, it will not survive very many nights like we have been having. I suggested they get with an Austin AKC tracking club, but it is possible the person has moved on due to some of the more stupid replies I have since removed from the thread. Also, if stolen and not escaped, a tracking dog will not help. If escaped, Blaze could track it, but any tracking titled dog could do it better.
