What is unique about a 300 Blackout round and where does it fall in comparing to say a 5.56 or 7.62(308) round?

I've got a Ruger M77 30.06 smooth barrel and a Remington 700 30.06 with sights on the barrel, both are 70's vintage rifles my father gave me. The Ruger barrel is several inches longer than the Remington and I would prefer not to have the sights on the Remy, but would spending the money to buy a 2nd hand longer barrel plus gunsmithing really make any difference under 250 yds?

Thanks,
Charlie

On the .300: just slightly more powerful than a .223, not even to a 7.62x39. On the second question: no.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

The uniqueness of the 300BLK is that you can fire it in an AR by simply changing the upper and using standard .223 magazines. The 300BLK uses the same BCG as the .223. Gives you the ability to shoot a 308 cal bullet. The 300 also has a variety of loads for it from 115 or 125 grain supersonic rounds to 220 grain subsonic rounds if you shoot a suppressor.

Don't rebarrel just to get rid of the sights.

If you want to do something new and cool with one of your old 30.06's,
look at re-barreling one (probably the r700) into 280 or 6.5-284 (Long Action).
