Anyone shooting any 3 gun competitions?
What rigs are you running for the 3 firearms?
What start up advice can you give?
I'm an experienced shooter just looking at trying a few.

Before I just posted you had the perfect 10% ratio. Sometimes, you just have to let a thread soak before you get people who know something about the topic to post.
Your thread is very specialized and not many people know anything about 3 gun competitions. I sure don't. For a quicker response, start a thread about a sick dog or how bad you hate cats. Trucks with stacks is always a popular thread but has gotten pretty stale. We have not had a thread about peanuts in your coke in about a month, so it might be time to throw that one back out there. We could use another remember when thread again too. Wanna buy a Yeti?
Can you help me understand 3 gun competition? I think it is probably single action Cowboy guns, maybe a rifle, and a shotgun. Educate me.

Listen to the man! That right there, is good advice. All that was needed was a rim shot.

Me and my son compete
I use a Glock 34 a somewhat tricked out DTech AR and a Beretta 1301 Comp shotgun

I dabble in it. Glock 34 or STI Tactical 2011, versamax Tacical shotgun and AR15. I'm sure Misfire will post up about the subject

Springfield Xdm 5.25" competition 9mm , Beretta 1301 comp, and colt 6920. The colts not really made for competition shooting like the other two but I havnt got good enough yet to justify sinking $2k in a AR for it yet. Best advice I can give you is just gather up what resources you have and go out to your local shoot. Most clubs are more than willing to help out new shooters with teaching rules and techniques , also they will usually lend guns and equipment for your first shoot.

I use a 20" DPMS AR, a Para 16-40, and Mossberg 930 Flannigan. Read the safety rules before you go. There are many things about the game that you may not know if you haven't shot. Take the stuff you have and go play! I always tell people that it will only take one match: you're either hooked for life or won't care for it at all. One more bit of advice: shoot a USPSA or IDPA pistol match before you jump into three gun. That way you can get a feel for the game, while only having to focus on one gun. There is a lot to be learned about three gun in the practical pistol world.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Like Tactical cowboy said try a uspsa or idpa match first. Me personality would try uspsa first because IDPA can be frustrating for a first timer because you have to stay behind cover and get docked if you don't.

I am not an ultra serious competitor but may shoot 1/2 dozen matches a year.. Usually mid pack
The top guys are ultra serious and practice a LOT.
Best advice is to go watch a local match and just hang out, watch and ask questions. Most guys are very helpful and willing to share knowledge.
If you are a decent shooter and are safe you don't need to have the best gear out there. Frankly, what kicks most guys butt is the shotgun stages due to round count and time.
Understanding the rules of the stages takes some time getting the hang out of how it all works.
Lots of fun though if you like shooting and hanging out with like minded guys for the day.
I am on an MLD hunting property so Oct-Feb I don't compete, about ready to start getting some practice in and hitting some matches.
A basic AR15 with a red dot or 1-4/5/6 is all you need from a rifle perspective A GLock, M&P, whatever is fine Shotgun, an extended tube is a huge help but people show up without them.
You need to be able to carry all your ammo and have reliable mags.
Just go watch a match or two, then show up with that knowledge and have fun.
The top guys approach it for what it is, a game, and they analyze the stage before they shoot to optimize time. A lot of guys just do it for the fun and comradely and practice shooting under pressure.

My advice is to find a local match, sign up, take what guns you have and go shoot it. A lot of people advise going and watching before participating but I'm not one of them. Pay attention to the safety brief and let your ROs and squad mates know it's your first match and they will keep you straight. After watching 4 or 5 shooter run a stage you will have a pretty good idea of how to do it safely.
As far as weapon choice there are a MILLION different things that play in that decision, but more importantly is the support gear you choose for your shooting style. Until you shoot a match or two it's hard to say what your "style" is. Are you a 4 caddy loader, deuce dropper, quad loader, red dot guy, scope guy, hosser, long ranger, spray and pray, slow precision fire, etc..?? Where and how do you want to set up your shell cadddys, pistol and rifle mags on your belt etc.. There is a lot to the set up and set up is expensive so it's good to have an idea of what you want before you start spending money.
If you just want to go have some fun it doesn't matter what you take and shoot. An ar, pistol and shotgun will get you through.
Personally, I shoot a Lone Star Armory AR with a Leupold Multi-gun scope, STI Tactical 5.0 pistol in 9mm and an older M1 Super 90. All three are tailored to my specific needs and shooting style.
I'm not sure where you are from but if you make it out to a NTMG, North Texas Multigun match let me know and I'll meet you there. They have a lot of monthly matches and are now shooting in Cresson, TX. You are more than welcome to run my gear to get a better idea of what you may want/need.

So in theory I could start shooting 3 gun with my duty guns? A P226 in 357, an AR with Aimpoint, and a pump shotgun? I know the shotgun isn't ideal, but would it be doable?

If you are LE you should be proficient enough to just show up and shoot.
Be one of the last guys to shoot each stage so you can see how people run the stage.

I do it for the practice rather than really trying I compete. I use a stock Glock 22, mossberg 930 (5 shot) and an 11.5" SBR piston AR. When you start focus on being smooth instead of fast. Slow and smooth is much better than fast and sloppy. I have managed to finish towards the top of the group where I have gone despite not using race style guns.
