Howdy, I have some questions about meat hunts. I'm posting in exotics since I do have access to whitetail hunts in season. I haven't been able to hunt the past few years, though as our property had a fire on it and we've been recovering from that. It looks like this fall we will finally be able to hunt again, but my freezer is empty now and I've got a family to feed, lol. food

We have one (empty) chest deep freeze, and I'm not adverse to getting another if needed.

My FIL went on a trophy bison hunt up in Canada about ten years ago and they shipped the processed meat to his house. So my first question is: How common is it to do a meat hunt and the ranch processes and ships the meat to you? And also do you know of any ranches that do this?

Second question is, what sort of game would you recommend for a meat hunt? I have access to a wide range of calibers, so I'm not limited in game size, so much as price of a hunt. Though from a short search online it looks like a half of grass finished beef could run me about the same to even more than game meat. confused2

Thanks for your time!

A 450 lb steer is bringing an average of $1238.00 where I live. About 250 lbs of meat @ 4.95 a pound. Add to that processing cost, and milk and grass fed beef is pretty expensive, but game is probably even higher...

I was going by this beef ranch's site.
http://www.cjgrassfed.com/frequently-asked-questions-when-ordering-bulk-beef

Which is saying that a 250lb hanging weight beef half, processed, sells for about $1190.00. And from what I've seen, you can get a red deer hind / elk cow meat hunt for a little less than that.

Am I looking in the wrong places?

If it looks good, eat it.

Rocks are cool, also kittens.

I don't have any experience with outfits that will send you the meat processed but I have seen a few that post on here in the outfitter section.

In terms of meat, I would highly recommend either axis or scimitar. Seen a few post on cull oryx hunts which is some of the best meat around and a nice trophy as well. Also, lots of free range axis to hunt, amazing table fare and a fun hunt.
