I have a Ruger M77 in 300wm that I would like to upgrade the stock for. Right now it sits in the its factory, tupperware stock. It's straight a plain synthetic with the stock touching the barrel. There are not too many aftermarket options, mostly looking for something comparable in price and quality as a B&C sporter or hunter. questions...
Is there is difference in replacement stocks between a stand LA (30-06, 270, etc) vs the magnum action (300wm, 7mm RM, etc.)?Do i have to specifically find a magnum stock? Would it even be worth installing aluminum pillars and bedding the stock, meaning will I see noticeable gains in consistency? I'm partially wanting to do it for the learning experience as well.

Boyds Stocks produces some very nice stocks for the Ruger M77. I have seen several that were really a work of art. Take a look at their website and see if there is something there you like. www.boydsgunstocks.com

I have a Hawkeye with the synthetic stock. After buying a new stock, I finally put the original back on. I just removed enough stock to free float the barrel. I just like the feel of the original stock. And it's really light.

I love Ruger M77s, just got me a M77/44 synthetic stock, don't plan on replacing it...I bought these M77s cause they are M77s....didn't spend money to change em or I would have bought another rifle. I own 10 M77s....wouldn't think of messing with them...the walnut stocks on them are a main reason I bought them.

Not to hijack post, but I have a short action Ruger 77 walnut stock that is very clean. Won't help OP but if you ever need one it could be bought.

Look at the Boyd's. There was a young man at the long range hunting match we were in, He had his Ruger 77 in one. It was sweet!!
As far as action, Boyd's website should say.
Great idea too, go to Brownells.com, get a pillar bedding kit. Lighten the trigger to 3lbs, should be a great improvement. I think the heavier wood stock with a Decelerator recoil pad should take some of the "bite" out of the Maggie. Make sure you keep the correct length of pull.
Have fun and post pics when done!!
