What goose calls are yall using? Looking for something easy to blow that doesn't take a ton of air. I'm thinking the zink call of death. Any other recommendations?

I have a COD. I don't know how to blow a goose call. I'm awful. I have heard others blow the COD just fine.

Right now I am using the cheap poly quackhead speckle belly and canada calls. I got the spec for free by paying $7 shipping and the other was academy for $15 maybe. I am developing a speckle belly myself but it is not completed. I am trying to figure out what on the guts makes it easier for a yodal on the speck. It aint easy with just a wood file.

There is no need to drop a lot of cash on a call. I would put that free quackhead spec call up against any $150-$200 spec call and hang right there with them.

The COD has a super cheesy name, but IMO it is one of the best sounding goose calls out there. The Tim Grounds supermag is another great sounding call.

It ain't the hammer, it's the carpenter.

Agreed, just seems like there is a bunch of people that think you have to have a $300 acrylic kazoo to kill a bird.

If your thinking the COD, I assume your hunting Canadas then. Lots of money does not always equal the best call for "you". From what I have seen hunting with other people, goose calling styles vary way more than duck calling. I recommend visiting a Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc. where there are lots of calls you can hands on try out. There are some high end calls that just did not sing to me when I tried them or do not fit my calling style.

What I use is a Patriot, http://www.cuttdowncalls.com/goose-calls.htm and happy enough with it, that one would be hard pressed to talk me into changing. I can make that call sound like a lot of geese at once, though I could see myself using a Tim Grounds for a little different sound or as my backup.
I used the Poly "Loudmouth" for a long time with great success, then went to their Patriot in Texas Bo Darc & Acrylic. Only I found the wood call was cut straight bore with a sharp edge on the inside the mouth that was uncomfortable. I dremeled it till it had the same bore and shape as my old Loudmouth to get the sound I wanted. Extremely happy with it now, but I would buy the poly or Acrylic and stay away from the wood one if someone were interested in that call.

From picking them up and trying them, if I just wanted to have a more expensive call around my neck, I would buy one of the high end Tim Grounds short reeds. Personally the Zincs calls I tried do not sing to me, but it could just be the particular calls I picked up had been messed with or tuned wrong. My old backups and guest calls that I can make sound good without a lot of effort are inexpensive Quackhead and Gardner Honker calls.

I also use an old Lohman Goose Flute that has changeable rings to tune the back pressure that I really like, but it is mostly my resident Canada calls for it's deep herronk sound. The current Lohman Big River flute makes a good old school magnum goose sound as well IMHO. And my current guest call is a Tim Grounds Old School, but it is a one trick pony resonant cavity type calls that makes a honk that even a first time hunter could use.

Flextone makes a $10 goose call that works as well as any other call on the market. I've seen (and used) that call to pull tons of birds without worrying about losing or damaging a more expensive call which is basically a $50 or $100 bill hanging off a string around your neck.

Get a goose flag while you're at it. You can flag birds to your doorstep, with or without a call.
