I handled a compact American in .308 today and I'm thinking of purchasing one. The stock feels cheap but the action and trigger are good. I figured for $340 I would give it a try. I don't need a super accurate rifle but I would like 1" groups or better out of the box.

I've been looking around this price range as well. I think the Savage Axis II is probably a better value. Around $400, but you can get $50-$70 back selling the scope that comes with it on ebay.

mad I picked up a standard in 7mm-08 but still haven't made it to the range. HOPEFULLY it will happen this weekend! I think it's a good gun and I hear almost nothing but raves about the accuracy. I couldn't pass on the deal at $307

I had a compact in 7mm08. Really liked it and would have kept it but was offered a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 with a leupold scope in exchange.

I had one of my students bring out the Ruger American in 208 to the ranch the other day. He bought it and thought it would be a fun little gun to play with . First round was hard to close and after firing would not open. I had to use a cleaning rod to bump open from the inside. Rounds 2 and 3 were the same way. We removed the bolt and found it had broken after the 3rd shot. The bolt is very rough and there is a small black metal piece that somehow came off exposing a spring. HE took it back and traded the broken rifle for a Remington 700. The bolt design on the Ruger was very disappointing compared to the Remington.

I have seen other that said they really like the gun to just leave in the truck and not worry about it getting torn up.

Those problems sound like a Remington 770.

Until this thread, haven't heard or read much bad on the Ruger American other than the stock having a cheap feel.

Here is a close of the Ruger on the left showing the small black metal piece. the edges around the bolt were very rough. The photo on the right shows a comparison. It could have been just the one he bought, but I am not impressed with a bolt where pieces come off easily.

So the little black extractor came out? All of those look a lot better than one Remmy 700 257 Roberts I bought that had a burr and gouge it came from in the bolt face sticking out over 1/16 of an inch and you could not chamber a cartridge. Not saying his Ruger didn't have a problem, it obviously did but saying Remington ain't perfect either.

You are right, neither are custom for sure. I was disappointed that the piece came off so easily. Not very reassuring.
