I don't live on my land.

I have a poacher and I expect he/they will return next deer season.

I'm thinking about some black out cameras but don't know about the night time range. And, I hate to spend too much $ because they might just get stolen if spotted.

Does anybody have experience on what to get or not get?

Have you contacted your local Game Warden? If not, start there. He/she can complete random run throughs on your place and see if there is anyone out there.

The cams are all about the same to be honest. The trick is to find a good spot to hide them but that will also get you some pics of the poacher. Be creative in your hiding spot.

Hope you find them. Good luck!

game cams will work fine you just need to put them out of reach and out of sight

If you have cell service might want to check out those gsm cameras that will send you text/email pics.

Cellular game cam, put up high (and in LockBox & w/ solar) and aimed at a cheaper regular game cam to catch poachers face when he goes for the cheaper cam.
Cellular will catch his face and upload to network before he can attack it, if he finds it; you'll know real-time when he's there too.

put a broken camera out as bait where the loser will see it and take it. put your name and DL # in it too. hide a good working camera up high and get photo of him taking your goods. chances are you will get snapshot of him. if he goes to sell your goods with your ID in them or has in his possession when the law visits, you got case for the prosecution

This.

We had a camera, feeder and stand all stolen from the same location back in November. Called the game warden which I do recommend but in this case they never caught anyone. Not visible from the road whoever took it was back in there a ways.

The most visible part of the camera is the strap, I have started using a wire loop and a nail in the tree. Makes them very hard to see. Sometimes I have trouble finding them and I know where they are.

If you want to keep your camera, get one of these to lock it up. No one is stealing it without a chainsaw after lag bolted to the tree!

I move mine too much to bother, so I just lock them with a cable and usually have one watching the other anyways.

Some of mine after camo painting:

The process is spray alternating dark and light flat colors. Let it dry then use the opposite color sprayed on a sponge applied to opposite color on the box.

Thanks all. I've gotten some ideas that I hadn't considered.

Make sure you get a camera that does not flash or emit light when taking a pic...no camera case will withstand a sledge hammer attack.

I have four of these, when they are strapped to a tree they almost disappear. I also have some dummy cams (old Moultries that died) that are fairly easily spotted for decoys.

Also go to hobby lobby and pick up a bag of moss to use to break up outline of camera...works great.

We had a problem a few years back and did as suggested, put a dummy out and place a real cam high up in a tree covering the gate to the lease. Got a picture of the thief stealing the dummy and another of his truck and partial license plate. He was arrested a week later breaking into a cabin on another ranch. Meth head the deputy said.

Don't place too much hope on betting action from turning over pictures to the game warden or sheriff.

After two robberies on our property (both reported), I set up two camouflaged cameras and a decoy camera. One on the gate, on our cabin.

Got some pretty good pics, and turned the over to the SO...I never got as much as a follow up call from the SO.

There is a sign on the gate, just to the left of the skinny as5 b1*** crawling through the gate that says "Posted: Trespassers will be prosecuted" sign.
