I'm looking at Norinco AK's. I really think I want an underfolder. Can I convert a MAC90 sporter, or NHM91, with thumbhole stock, into an underfolder. I'm also thinking I may want to put an AR type, adjustable stock on one. Are there any standards that I can know, that would help me to know what kind of options I have, when buying an AK? I want to be able to do this appropriately, and not all jerry rigged.

Thanks for any help.

I can't speak about AR type adjustable stocks on an AK - I'm not your man for that. To convert a Mac 90 to an underfolder you need to start with one that was originally an underfolder to begin with and converted to a shoulder stock as part of the import ban. The whole for the underfolder assembly is typically plugged but the plug comes right out and you can put the underfolder assembly in these guns. To be legal under 922r regulations you then need to ensure you have the appropriate number of US made parts. Look here to determine if your parts count is legal or not under 922r:

Ok, so if it was originally a thumbhole, it cannot be converted? Or are thumbholes all conversions?

Thanks

Underfolders have a different trunion than non underfolders so if you want an underfolder you need a receiver that will accept one. Many Mak90's have them, they were originally underfolders but were caught up during the ban and were converted. If you don't have a receiver that can take an underfolder kit - you have to use something such as a side folder.

You can convert any Mak 90 to a "ban" configuration - so with a non underfolder receiver you can put a buttstock and pistol grip on it. But when you convert any post ban gun to a ban configuration you must have the proper amount of US parts to be 922r compliant. That's what the link I posted covers.

Look at this guys gun - your receiver needs to have those dimples above the pistol grip in order to use an underfolder kit:

Thanks Earl. I know I have to stay on top of all the 922r stuff, and it gets kind of complex, once I start tying to change, or modify a gun. I need at least one AK in my arsenal. and am trying to find the right fit, for a decent price. I really should have bought one years ago, when they were half the price of what they are now. Anyway, I appreciate your input, and advice.

You will be limited with your desire to stick w/ Mak 90 as your foundation. By the time you replace the rear trunnion and install all the underfolder and/or sidefolding parts, you would be just as expensive, if not more expensive, than just buying a gun that was set up originally as a side/under folder. There are great deals out there on Yugo underfolders, and there are still a lot of SLR (Bulgarian) AKs that are sidefolders. My advice is to get a Mak 90 if you really want one, and keep it that way (may be worth a lot more in the future to people in ban states that still allow ban-compliant configurations), and get a Yugo m70 underfolder or SLR-107 sidefolder.

If you don't already own an AK then you might as well just buy one of the Underfolder models to start - Centerfire Systems usually has them cheap.

If you do own a AK then it's not hard to add an under folder; you just swap out the rear trunnion and drill a few holes.
