I am going to make a new feeder from a drum. I want it to be low where there is no ladder etc required. Basically walk right up and dump the corn. I am going to place a cage around the feeder for coon control. Any other recommendations that I need from your experience?

My back is too old and riveted to take on other feeders.

As long as you do not have any cows it should work. I did one like that.

There are cows, but I will build a pen to keep them and hogs out

Just by a regular feeder and cut the legs off to a height you like.

Whether I buy it or build it any new feeders that I add will be like these.

Years ago when I worked for Wagner Brown we had auger type feed systems for transferring plastic pellets and dry powders. I took one of the old enclosed hoppers an auger and a starter motor and built a feeder that cast from the top. The whole thing was only 5 ft tall and would hold 500 lbs of corn. Cows and hogs didn't mess with it and coons could only get the corn that was sitting on top of the auger which amounted to a couple of handfuls. Let me add that it was noisy but they got used to it.

I would love to have one of these low profile feeders but I still don't understand how the corn is thrown far enough from the feeder. If these work that well, why does everyone have tall feeders?

Use a good 12 volt motor and battery, it will scatter corn. Narrow the gap a little so it is not just dumping corn out, and run it a longer to get your rpm up on the motor for the most scattering effect added bonus it sounds off longer catching their attention.

This is a homemade 55-gallon feeder with a 12-v motor, varmint cage and a wide base to ensure better stability. I'd build it just like any other feeder except put your leg brackets higher so your legs give it a wider base.

A12-volt motor gets it out there.

IMOP… If you’re going to put a cheap 6 volt control unit on a stand and fill feeder I you’re going to get much slinging distance.

I have an All Seasons 600lb stand and fill feeder equipped with the All Seasons 12 volt control unit. I’m guessing this feeder will sling corn out greater than 30ft.

I just purchased my second stand and fill from Ramball36 and I will be installing a good quality 12 volt control unit on it this week.

I will say... Ramball36 builds one hell of a stand and fill feeder and if you’re ever in the market for one you owe it to yourself to at least checkout his feeders before purchasing one


I started using stand and fill last year and my only regret is I didn’t start using it sooner.

My plan is to replace all my remaining ladder feeders with stand and fill feeders in the near future.

I had a bunch of spare parts left over last year, including some short leg pieces of pipe for legs So, I built a low boy. It works great. Slings corn plenty far, even with the varmint guard on.

Only negative is you do not have a shot on an animal immediately behind the feeder. And, if you take a shot at a deer standing in front of your feeder there's a real good chance you'll hit the feeder via pass-thru. Other than that, they're great.

Ramball made me a couple last year.
They looked a lot like this with some tweaks.

Seems like the varmit cage would knock down a lot of the corn near the feeder.

That's where the 12-volt comes in. In all honesty, the cage does knock a lot of corn down but the trade off is minimal.

The corn bandits would empty this feeder with in a weeks time without the cage. With the cage off center 2 weeks. I had to add a licences plate off one of the old trailers at camp to the short side of the cage to get back to normal average.

Man you really need to try some Duke Dog Proof Coon Traps and get rid of those for good and then when more show up just start trapping again. Use cat food and marshmallows. Its great fun with a 22.

I have 18 of the dog proof traps. Problem is I have 16 spin cast feeders covering 9000 acres. Not enough time in the day. LOL

And 2 boys that are very proficient with the.22.

These Texas Sled Feeders appear worth considering. Any feedback from experience?
