I hunt hogs with a .44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk, one in 7.5" barrel, one in 5.5" barrel. Decided I just had to have a Ruger M77/44 to compliment them. Beautiful, short stainless/synthetic carbine, 18.5" barrel. I put a Leupold 2x7x33 on it and got 1 1/2" groups out of it after a while. I was surprised at the recoil it puts out, I shot a .357 mag carbine before and very little recoil, this little one will let your shoulder know it after a while. Anyone else hunt deer or hogs with a carbine like this, and what are best rounds for it? I plan on keeping it at 125 yards at the max. I was gonna leave it without a scope, but soon found out my 61 year old eyes just don't work too good anymore.

The hornady leverevolution works great.

I have a Winchester 94 in .44 mag and I too was surprised that it has a little bit of kick to it. I had a scope on it for a while but I didn't like it. Sadly I haven't shot it in years.

Remington 788, custom Mauser, Ruger semiauto carbine and a Winchester 94 plus a TC contender and a S&W 629PC hunter package. Might say I like the 44Mag. Pretty much any ammo will work well except Winchester Silvertip, that one is too soft. Hard cast loads work well. Not a fan of 180 or 200 gr bullets either. A good recoil pad helps spread the recoil over more time effectively making it seem much less.

Yes, 44 Mag in a light rifle feels as though you have been kicked by a mule and it is a very sharp impulse. It is also very hard on the ears.

I use a 310grn hard cast FPGC in my 94 Winchester and it does a number on anything it hits.

I wish I still had the chance of buying one of those old Ruger .44 mags...the old Deerslayer or Deerfield...hindsight.....they are worth 3 times their original price now, if you can find one. I am gonna try some of those Leverrevolution ammo see how well they work, right now, just shooting Winchester 240 grain flat nose...I got lots of hogs to kill, lots in creek bottoms, the main reason I bought this lil beast.

Those Winchester 240gr flat nose will kill hogs without a doubt. Have fun and enjoy that new gun. I hunted with the 44s a lot more before I got a little Marlin 1894 357.

I now shoot one in 45 colt. It has a stainless butt plate and will tear your shoulder up with warm 360 grain bullets if you are not holding it right.

I have one of the older tube fed carbines. It is my favorite woods gun. I have killed lots of deer and pigs with it.
It shoots every hunting load Ive ever fed it well. 210 Winchester HP - 300 gn cast Buffalo Bore.
My favorite factory load is the 250 gn Winchester HPs. I hand load a 260 gn flat bullet over 19.5 gns of H 110 and its pleasant to shoot.
Actually every factory round I have used has been good. I have not needed to adjust my scope etc. They all shoot DRT.Mine of course does not cycle 44 specials or mild factory loads.
I would love to have the bolt gun and the lever by Ruger.

It ain't easy being me.

In the King James version of the Bible there are a few verses that would trip the [censored] language filter. More recent translations have censored a few words changing them to more acceptable for the times words.

Some words have multiple meanings and are in the language filter for one meaning not the other.

Boyd's now makes laminate stocks for that thing that tames the recoil. You really have to find what ammo your rifle likes best-vs-whats available on the shelf in constant supply. 44's can be very picky.

Its hard for folk to appreciate the recoil that thing has. It kicks as hard as a Marlin 450 to me.

That rifle will quickly become a favorite too. To quote a gun review "If it were anymore of a brush gun, it would have a lever". I agree but will add, It handles better than any "Lite" version of Levergun ever made. I know because I have them all. My lightest Levergun is 34" long and weighs 6lbs and some change with 2.5x scope and Talley rings. It still doesn't handle as good as the 77/44.

I hunt with a Ruger 99/44, and my 10yr old sons uses it too. For the time being, Winchester 240gr JSP has taken 4 WT and 1 aoudad. Best hunting rifle in the safe. I did just handloading for it, and will be using both 240gr JSP and 240gr XTP's to see what shoots best. Its just hard to top a true 1" carbine (3 shot group from a lead sled) with factory ammo.

Its also hard to beat a 77 Compact 308, handles even better than the 77/44 and the cheap blue box does better than the 44 in most respects.

I still like 44's though.

I had a Ruger semi auto carbine for a few years. Never liked it. It was left to me by my dads dad. Or so I was told. However when one of his sons, an uncle that taught me a lot about the outdoors, wanted to trade me for it for a Mohawk 600 in 6mm I jumped on it. Uncle Cookie is gone now and I wish I could get that one back, but I wouldn't trade that Mohawk for anything.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

I wish I could find one of those old Ruger .44 mag carbines....the souped up 10/22 type...the Deerslayer or Deerfield models...just cause...I hunt in Central Texas, some of my shots can be over 600 yards...some can be real close like when I go after lost cattle in the creek/river bottoms and surprise hogs....come in handy...so many hogs, so little time.

Those are great little guns but are getting harder to find and seems like the price keeps going up on them if they are in good condition. Actually they were Rugers first long gun. The 10/22 was patterned after the 44 not the other way around. That model 44 action operates like the 30 carbine.

the main reason I wanted a pistol caliber carbine is cause I got a couple spots loaded with hogs, one is within sight of I-10, other has a house about a half mile away and didn't want a flat shooter or even a 30-30, my eyes aint good anymore at my age and I figured a .357 mag carbine might not be enough for a big hog....this .44 mag carbine got lots of what I need, at 100 yards I got 1" groups with a scope, recoil is pretty stout, more than I expected, only had it 2 weeks but already a favorite of mine....got a week off and gonna take it along with the flavor of the day, usually a .308, 7mm-08 or .22-250....got so many hogs to kill and so little time, even a little old lady next ranch over asked me to come over and shoot a few...cant wait.
