At a time in which the Texas Legislature wants to give back billions of tax dollars, friends of the state’s parks system continue to battle for the revenue that rightfully should be going toward the purchase, construction and upkeep of parks.

It seems a popular notion with everyone, except maybe legislators.

In 1993 the 73rd Legislature made a healthy move and changed parks funding from a then dwindling penny-a-pack tax on cigarettes to a more robust general sales tax on selected sporting goods items. The thought was that the increased revenue would help pull the park system out of the gutter and make it a gem that attracted both Texans and out-of-state visitors.

But the tax proved too profitable and legislators couldn’t keep their hands off the tens of millions generated so they immediately started diverting funds, leaving parks with only pennies on the dollar.

Making matters worse, parks officials were forced to divvy up the money among an assortment of funds instead of putting it where it was needed most.

They should be using the money to buy more land, like this place:

What would be nice is to see some conservation groups to band together and sue the state on behalf of TPWD. The money is there, but the greedy SOB's in Austin would rather sit on it and starve TPWD. I can't believe more people aren't outraged about this. THEY ARE STEALING YOUR MONEY FOLKS!

Have hunted WMA land since one opened down the road. Applied for a job. bang shoud have done better in english class, with my thars rofl their, there, & they're. Several years back, was talking ta one of the guys that worked their. He was telling me about the cut backs, & hard times. Being at the bottom of the totum pole, have heard that all my working years. In life every one looks up ta the top of the totum pole & try to reach. Yet fail to notice at the bottom, were the weight is on the shoulders of the little people. Asked about volenteering, they want ya ta feel out an aplication, & know your & every one ya know, life history. still proud supporter of WMA just hit some hard times.
