Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Closest you could get? I dunno, 1000 yards? Depends on the shooter.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Do you want one as a collectable military weapon? Or because of it's accuracy?
I don't know anything about the m24. I had to read the links to see what it was. But how does it differ from a standard model 700 in .308 with a match barrel and externally adjustable trigger?

I think I'd rather have something like this, but to each their own. http://www.texasbrigadearmory.com/m70.htm

They are just Remington custom shop built 700s. The original barrels for M-24s were outsourced, but I think they are all in house now.

Other than nostalgia purposes, what would be the reason for owning such a rifle? Long action, 308, bdl style floor plate, hs precision stock. None of those things seem to add up to an efficient rifle.
On the other hand, who am I to judge? Buy the GAP, and shoot the heck out of it.

The 5R is basically the civilian equivalent. I have one, shoots lights out with a jewell trigger.

I think there's a good chance he used a M110 more if he was in urban environments a lot. I don't know when he deployed though. I think those were issued starting in 2008.

He was the living evidence of the indian being more important than the arrow. He should have been using some variation of the MK13....
