I contacted Mike O'Dell at Wendy Lou about a hinds hunt a few weeks ago. I told him what my friend and I wanted: a no-frills meat hunt. Mike said the Hinds would be a bit skittish by February, but that if we were comfy shooting distances of up to 300 yds., he felt he could get us on some shot opps.

Mike was standing by his truck waiting on us when we arrived. Waivers were signed, plans were made for how we would find the Hinds, and off we went. Mike is the quintessential student of African game, and after 30-something years on Wendy Lou, knows every rock and shrub on the place. Our plan was spot-n-stalk, and once we found them, we learned that Mike was spot-on...the Hinds were skittish as heck.

(Note: Mike would say something like, "We need to go ove...", and that would be all you would hear, because Mike would already be 30 yards ahead of you and moving like a billy goat over that rocky terrain with a speed neither of us could quite match. Not bad for a 67-year old.)

Eventually, Mike read the intentions of the herd perfectly, and got us both shot opportunities on good-sized, mature Hinds. Shots had to be quick, as they were nervous, but we got it done. A quartering-to shot double-lunged mine, and Jim knocked his off her feet with a perfect quartering-to shot, as well.

(Another note: HOLY COW YOU SHOULD SEE ALL THE GEMSBOK! BIIIG ones!)

We didn't see any more of the place than the incredibly beautiful 2000+ acre parcel we hunted Hinds on, but I understand there's a killer lodge & a lot more to the place. Both Jim and I told our wives that another trip to Wendy Lou is what we want for Christmas 2015. We're even considering making it a family affair that will include the lodge & animals for our wives to help fill the freezers, too. I highly recommend Michael, but I know he's also got a Son (or son in law...can't quite remember) that is just as knowledgeable and effective.

If you'd like to hear more or have questions, I'm happy to answer. Thanks for looking!

J.R.

J.R. - Thanks for your generous report and I'm so happy you both had a good hunt and are planning to return to the Wendy Lou in the future, and we sure look forward to that. (Mike is not one to frequent these boards but I pass these reports on to him - he'll enjoy reading your feedback)
