Found a good deal on a clean 2001 4wd chevy 2500HD duramax it has 190k on the motor and they had the injectors done a while back. She burns clean with no haze or white smoke but I did notice the power steering leaking and another leak at the rear main seal these are minor repairs but my question is do I expect any major issues with this truck and the mileage? I've been around a lot of ford diesels and dodges but never duramax's just curious to hear what you guys have to say.
Thanks in advance.

The only thing I was told from some friends, it had a lack of power. No first had experience.

I drove a few of these when they were new, used for hauling hay and pipe, they were underpowered. If you don't plan on doing towing over 8k it should be a good truck. I don't recall those ever having a problem but I only drove them for about 30,000 miles. The 2004-2007 were very good trucks and plenty of power.

Well that sucks to hear I'll be pulling around 5-8k, trying to avoid financing another vehicle and buying a strong 4wd cash.

Its rated at 250 hp and 520 lb ft of torque. It will handle anything a comparable year dodge or ford will. None of the earlier diesels put up much of anything for hp numbers, the torque was and still is where its at, and 520 is enough.
Dad and brother both have d-maxes('04-05) range approaching 200k miles. Minor issues only. Dad had to replace stepper motors in dash gauges and both had to have the fuel filter housing rebuilt and that is pretty much it. They both run really good.
Fella I know had an '02 model he pulled a 10k plus grain trailer with it for 3 years and then traded it in on an '05 d-max because it didn't have lumbar support. Before he had the '02 d-max he pulled the same trailer with a GM 6.5...

I might be me mistaken, but the early Allison trans were a 4 speed and then became a 6 speed. The 4 speeds seemed to never want to down shift which made the truck feel like it was always bogged down. Granted, 520 ft lbs is plenty, it's just the way the truck drives while towing that gives the perception of being underpowered.

First model Allison is a 5-speed that I know of. They didn't make a 6-speed till the 2006 year model. Never had a complain with the 5 speed in any of ours and it surely will downshift.

The Alison has always been a 5-speed... but on second thought, I believe you could get the duramax with the regular 4-speed in the first year or so of production of the duramax and the Alison was an option. Shortly after the Allison became standard option with the d-max.

Personally I would get an 05 or 06 model. Never had any issues with the 1 motors other than injectors.

Thanks for the feedback I decided to stay away from that 01 and went with an 05 F-250.
