My brother in law just got a new lease, and by default I am on it smile

Question is, does anyone know much about this area...Deer popoulation, hogs, fishing the Sabine, ducks etc...

The land backs up to the Sabine River, which is our back property line...Only saw the land on a quick walk around with the owners showing us the boundrys...

It is 140 acres, just looking for any info on the town, area, on hunting & fishing as well as poachers...I know they can be anywhere, just trying to some input if this area is know for theft of game or hunting equiptment as well...

Thanks in advance...Hoping for "positive" answers smile

Good hog hunting. Good deer are there but don't expect to see deer every sit or even every 3rd. You're very close to the Old Sabine Bottom WMA. I have a friend who has land on the Smith County side of the river and he's never had poachers nor theives.

It sounds good to me if the price is right. Sabine river area holds deer year-round. Go check it out.

My family has 250 acres a little North of the river just outside of Hawkins. There are deer in the bottoms, some pretty big, but they get big by rarely being seen. 140 Acres won't qualify for LAMPS so your only shot at does will be the doe weekend after Thanksgiving. If you don't already, take up duck hunting; lots of birds shot along the river. Fishing along the river is good as well.
Any oil or gas wells on the property? How about pump stations? If actual Exxon guys are on property to check or service things you're ok. But some of the sub contractors thay have hired in the past can get sketchy. Had had a feeder stolen years ago; they drove down the utility easement and cut the fence.
Derek Spitzer and Kurt Kelley are the Game Wardens. Nice guys. Derek live just outside of Hawkins.

I hunted there but not for game animals - a favorite forest friend, instead!

The area I was in was about 10 miles west of Hawkins. The area along the Sabine bottoms is very, very thick, so you would probably have to cut some shooting lanes. Probably wise to use a heavy caliber such as 45/70 or rifled shotgun slugs!

We saw lots of hog tracks and only a few deer tracks and lots of coyotes.

Watch out for "The Sabine Thing"

been out there a while back and plenty of animals (hog, ducks varmits), deer can be reclusive. Even saw some Turkeys

if you don't already, you'll need
some thermacell units and refills
or some quality repellent like ben's
or the like.
it's mosquito city in that region when
it warm. you should see a lot of pork unless
it's one of the places where trespassing
is out of hand.
