Friday February 06 my wife and I met G ranch, Bobby Greiger, to chase one of his cull blackbucks. Although being new to hunting, my wife had already pegged blackbuck as a target animal, thus when Bobby posted about the broke horn animals, I jumped at the chance at surprising her with an early Valentine’s Day gift. We arrived at the ranch about 3pm, and were headed out by 4pm for a little spot and stalk. The ranch had a nice mix of cover and open food plot areas, and driving through the gate we could see a group of Fallow (with 2 nice bucks), and a larger group of Axis a bit further away, but still with noticeable shooter bucks in the herd. Everything scattered as soon as they saw the truck, but it was reassuring to begin our hunt with sightings of healthy, quality animals. We then began to see some blackbuck scattered about, with several prominent males chasing each other about. We were able to find one of the target bucks, but each time we would set up he busted us and would retreat far out of shooting range. The next morning we decided to hunt from a box blind that was about 100 yards from a protein feeder that Bobby knew the blackbuck like to use in the mornings. About 6:45am, we had 2 blackbuck in front of us, followed by one of the target bucks. By the time he gave my wife a broadside look, his body was partially obscured and she couldn’t take the shot. He moved out of site, only to return about 5 minutes later only to turn and walk straight away, never giving us more than a look at his backside. It was looking like our best chance at a shot had passed, when suddenly Bobby saw movement out of the left side window beside him. He quickly determined it was the other 1 horn buck, and I passed him the gun. He and my wife switched seats as the buck, only about 50 yards from the blind, was standing in a group of trees. The buck left his right side shoulder exposed, and after what seemed like forever, she squeezed off the shot, and dropped the blackbuck DRT. The buck was everything Bobby told us he would be and then some. 23” straight tape, and worn smooth for about 1/3 of his horn from fighting. He was good size as well, about the size of a hill country whitetail doe. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the hunt. Bobby is a super guide, very knowledgeable and good man to spend time with in the field and camp. We will definitely be back!
