My grandfather passed away this week, and I was given an old, kinda beat up, rifle. It appears to be a Mauser 98 action. My dad thinks it's a 7mm Mauser, but there aren't any real markings on it. Just some proof marks, but I can't find any indication on it what the caliber is. But I only spent about 30 seconds looking at it last night. We had the visitation and all to handle. Anybody have a good website with good info on mausers, or an easy way to determine what exactly ive got. I can post some pictures when we get back in town tomorrow.

Take a pic of the area just in front of the bolt - top of the chamber and then on the left side of the action (opposite side of the bolt handle). Some of the older military Mausers have their year of manufacture and location above the chamber and an older ’98 will be stamped on the left side “GEW 98”. I love Mausers, like to see the pics… up

Measure the muzzle to decide if it's 6.? Argentine, 7x57 mauser or 8mm mauser.

I guess that would be a simple solution.

Easier to get answers on a Mauser at:

Mauser Central

They'll want to see pics, too.

Kind regards, charlesb

Sorry for your loss Tff. Getting a new anything via that method is always difficult. Prayers to you and your family.

Thank you very much. Today was a tough day.

Took the scope bases off tonight. It's a Spanish Mauser marked Fabrica de armas 1925 model 1893. So it should be a 7x57.

Its been sporterized, stock has been cut down, but it looks pretty good as far as how it was cut down. Bolt handle has been bent, they were originally made with a straight bolt.

It's got basically 0 bluing left. Which is good. I've been looking for a project to reblue. I'll be doing another Resto on this one. There's really no rust to speak of thag I can see right now. Havnt pulled the action of the stock yet, and I haven't looked at the barrel. I gotta look up how to disassemble and clean it. Hopefully it'll shoot atleqst 2moa once I get it fixed up. I'd like another rifle to hunt with that other people can use like my wife or buddies.

You can get some Cerrosafe and make a chamber casting. It's very easy to do and you will have a way to measure dimensions and know exactly what round it fires. But yes, if it's indeed a Spanish Mauser there's a good chance it's 7×57.
And sorry for the loss of your Grandfather.
