Three of us got together for a Snipe hunt this weekend. Dave Speer, DoubleB20 and myself. Lots of birds, lost of shooting, and lots of exercise. DoubleB20 left before we got around to pictures. And sorry to Stinkbelly who was unable to make it last minute, we missed having you and your DD on this years THF Snipe rally. A great time was had. I was proud of Dash making some difficult retrieves. Been quite an experience for Dash Rip Rock this month. Going from hunting one of the largest game birds in north america to hunting one of the smallest.

Awesome. Great pics. Great looking pup! I agree. Now, allow me to ask a serious question based on the pic of sandhills. Is it common practice to allow a dog to retrieve a downed crane? On a guided goose hunt many years ago, we downed a crane and the guide held his dog and asked the shooter to retrieve the bird for fear of the crane injuring the dog. As well, not having a dog myself, I always just go pick up any downed cranes myself anyway. Any opinions? Is this a real threat or not really something to be worried about?

Only dangerous if the Crane is alive. Dash having done a lot of retriever hunt tests just likes to retrieve things, but never let a dog retrieve a crippled crane. Dash's main job on that hunt was to wake me up when he hears or sees cranes approaching. He like his aunt Blaze before him can hear them coming long before I can. Last year without Dash I woke up with a crane standing a few feet behind me. If the crane was crippled, the guide was correct in holding his dog back. Crippled Cranes and Crows will poke at eyes with their beaks. But as we know Rattlesnakes and Moccasins will strike a dog if the dog enters it's personal space, trucks will run over dogs if they run out in front of them, dogs will fall through ice on a frozen lake if it is too thin, alligators will eat dogs, boars will slash a dog if the dog grabs hold of them, and dogs will die of hypothermia and hyperthermia if they get too cold or too hot for too long. But I take my dogs out in all these conditions and situations. Keep risks calculated and use common sense with when, how, and what you do with your dog while hunting and your dog will be fine. And much happier than a dog left at home. This next picture in at mad island wma was a crane that fell way out in the marsh. Without Dash I never would have found it. Miss Blaze back in her day.
