Anyone ever hunted mulies, elk, etc... around Manti or Gunnison? I might have the opportunity to start hunting in that area next season, so I'm curious what the game is like around there.

If bowhunting elk they start and end the season too early in my opinion. Lived there and liked hunting Idaho since the elk went till late September. Plenty of public ground but a lot of limited entry on elk and even then they put the spike elk hunters in on you. I rifle hunted mulies once, a little further south of where you are talking about closer to the Paunsaugant (sp?), there is a reason it's called the orange army.....Don't just zero in on National Forest, there is tons of BLM and even school trust land. Best bet is to start with the Roads of Utah map(big red one). It will show you National Forest boundaries, then contact each National Forest and have them send you their forest maps. Don't expect it to make sense of why the National Forests are where they are, the Ashley may have one here and one there..... Then contact BLM and see if they have maps as well. These will show boundaries, roads, trails, etc...as well as any special restrictions. Then use them to draw boundaries, units, etc....in the roads of Utah map. Now, use all this information in conjunction with the Utah DOW regs to see where you can hunt. Don't expect any information from the locals unless you know them. To avoid crowds, if possible, avoid where ATV's are allowed.

For your best bet take up bowhunting if you don't already. Noticed you are in Happy Valley (Provo). There is a lot of hunting all along the Wasatch front. There was a road from Provo to Draper, dirt road that used to provide access. East end away from point of the mountain.

The people here aren't near as happy as people think. It's all a facade.

Why is that? Lots of hunters, too much pressure?

Ok, Provo is home to Brigham Young University (BYU) a Mormon university......so.....it's known in some circles as "Happy Valley"......aluding to the fact that everybody there is "happy", whether they are or no,t but they have to be because they are in utopia, and to seem anything other would likely be sinful....

One of those, "you had to be there"....
