I got up early even for me this morning. I thought I was going to get a lot done. I never got into my groove. Today was slow progress. I can say I am sick and dadburned tired of climbing up and down on the ducktoon boat every time I need something. It sucks working alone especially when you climb up there only to see the part you left behind thst is sitting where you forgot it. I did get the lower unit on so the motor is done. You can start seeing where I am headed with the framework.

You are about to hit that phase where progress starts to become more clearly visible.

We call that non-gym exercise laugh I went out this weekend and got some of that with John chasing snipe. There was more chasing than shooting (well in my case anyway) and as much as it kicked my butt it was good for me. Now I say I am going to swear off everything but salads and exercise for a couple months because I am WAY out of shape. When your heart is racing 15 minutes into a day that ends up 5x easier than the way they use to be you know you're in trouble!

I am definately getting there. I have 2 more upright posts and the frame for the roof to finish. When the tin goes on things will progress quickly.

Dave. I am not an 18 year old anymore but that is not where I wss headed with that. My point would be better made if I wrote it defferent. Being alone on major projects. First reason being it makes for a long day. Its a fun project with nobody with whom to share. The frustrating part is seeing a tool you need or a part you need, somewhere else. I seem to never find those items, until right after I climb the ladder and stand upright on the boat. When I find them they are never up on the deck of the boat. Those parts are inevitably on the workbench in the barn. It would be soooo much easier and faster if I had a partner on the ground.

I told my wife to help me yesterday. It took her 20 minutes to physically arrive and mentally she never did. She is 100 % against any man work. She stayed about 10 minutes.

Once I get the frame done the rest will go fast. It is just a real slow go because the welding. This is very thin carbon steel. It will blow out really easy. It has been windy and doing this with a little MIG makes it tough. Mig is not designed to weld in an outside windy environment. So I can get a good pool flow, have a big gust of wind and the the pool gets fouled. It usually blows out at that point. On critical joints I chose to used through bolts rather than rely on thin metal welds.

Chasing is right. The spots I hunt snipe, the ground is muddy and a tough haul. The cover is so sparse, the birds typically flush quite a ways away before we have a chance to get a shot. It's a hard hunt.

Wayne if you lived closer to the metromess I would be over there helping you with that rig. The design I drew up to float my blind, I wanted a small catwalk all the way around the blind, to 1) work my dog if needed so I could face her from any direction, and 2) to brush up the blind.

I knew what ya meant Wayne, hope it didn't come off wrong. That would be a fun project with a partner and some good tunes flowin and some cold ice tea at the beginning of the project and something cold in a can or bottle near the end of the day. Well I guess a man could even throw something dead on the smoker while out in the yard doing that and turn it into a party!

Wayne - what was the turn out with the lower unit? Did you have to do any extra work on it b/c of the shaft?

Dfwguy I had to tear the new lower unit all the way down to just the housing. I was thrn a able to switch to the correct shaft and out it all back together. 2 strokes and 4 stroke lowers on a merc have one slight difference. The 2 stroke is 5/8s of an inch at the upper spline and the 4 stroke is 3\4. The ither end that goes into the lower unit is perfectly the same.

Wal,

Just watched DD and they re-engineer a pontoon boat like you're doing. It looked great.

Can't wait to see your finished job.

I saw that the other day. I would be a lot farther along but this weather is cramping my progress. I am really looking forward to settling into one of the swivel chairs, cup of coffee, dearborn heater going and my brother making the family favorite breakfast if rice eggs and sausage.

How long has this project been in the making....seems like a few years or was that another pontoon you were messing with. Rome wasn't built in a day I guess...not sure how long it took to build the Taj.

I bought a pontoon boat 4 or 5 years ago for $400 with a trailer. I drove all the way west of Fort Worth to pick it up. I discovered it was rolled carbon steel after I got it home. My wife did some sanding and we painted it. It looked really good. We decked it and made furniture for it. I put pics up on internet. Somebody offered me money for it. Me being a money tramp, I sold it.

Fast forward. Found another pontoon. Offered rediculous amount for it. I was kidding, they took me serious and delivered said pontoon boat. I fixed it up. 26 footer we use to fish, love it. Fast forward again. Found this pontoon boat and went to battel with the owner. We batteld for a while and eventually he gave up and took the cash route. I paid $1300 for the Pontoon boat with poly floor. The floor alone is worth more than that. It had half a motor and a great trailer. That is the one in this thread. I have been working on it off and on for a couple months. It will be done soon I have just been very busy and the cold driving rain is ticken me all the way off (So far as working on the boat anyway).

So there you have it. The chronicles of Wano's new duck shooting palace. For those of you in question. Yes! I know it is big. Yes! I know some ducks will not finish in front of it. Yes! Yes! and of course yes! I don't care. Comfort is the name of the game. If they are shy of the blind, I will wait for the "not shy" of the blind birds. If the not shy of the blind birds don't show up, I will still be OK with that too.

There is a little more progress than what is on the last photo. I don't have a whole lot of welding to do. Once the tin starts going on, it will not take long at all to finsh the blind part.

Well you get at least one "Non guilty feeling" trip on account of that extremely bad arse decoy you sent me. I had guests at the house the other day that were admiring it. Yes it is on a shlef in my living room and not out in the barn obtaining Character as you all so easily call it.

I tell you what has really thrown me for a loop is the forward reverse/ throttle cables and lower unit gear select hook up. The binacle came in pieces. I know I got it all back together correctly. The cables were in place. THe lower unit I bought. I am a wicked arse mechanic at times, other times my brain just aint enough. I got frusttrated so I just keep procrastinating that part of the figuring out how to hook them all up.

I think the problem is getting the lower unit into neutral at the same time as the binacle before hooking it all up. I will throw this out there. I will trade a dog training and a cocobolo/ brass duck call to anyone who knows what they are doing that will come and hook that SOB up.

I have an old oven in the garage at my rent house. I might use it but what would work better would be an old travel trailer oven. I have an eyeball peeled when I am.out junk yarding.
