How much difference is there between different muzzle brakes in regards to how much recoil they reduce? Any thoughts suggestions would help. This is the one I am looking at for my wifes 308. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1069745...=ProductFinding

Yes there is a difference. Design and geometry matters. This one, with the angled side vents, and top holes will probably reduce more recoil than the one you linked to. I have two of these, one on a 7 Rem Mag, and one on a 6.5 Creedmoor. my .03 they work.....I've always liked Vais....no timing involved .....and they still piss off the NRA and the guy shooting next to you.......

I have muzzle brakes on my 300 win mag, 30-06 and .308. Lots of difference in the recoil. The gunsmith up here turned me on to a muzzle brake that has the ported holed angled forward. This helps take the noise away from the gun and not just to the sides. Big difference in the noise level when pulling the trigger. I don't remember the name of the brake, but many manufacturers use this way of drilling the ports to help with noise.
Also keep in mind the differences between use of your gun. Tactical/range shooting usually uses brakes with no holes on the bottom so dirt and such don't fly up. Hunting brakes usually have holes all around the brake. Mathematics shows that uniform holes all around should reduce more recoil, while no holes on the bottom should reduce recoil rise of the barrel. Always exceptions to these rules, but you will pay more for them too.

Buy a Harrell's Precision break. They are cheap and effective. I promise you for the money spent there is definitely none better. I would get a spiral break for bench shooting and side port break for prone shooting. (Chad, did you notice?  )

The ones I have are definitely less recoil, but they are loud as heck.
