I'm not sure where to post this, so I'll just post it here.

A friend and I traveled 4 hours each way last week to Jason's (FiremanJG) place NE of the metromess. Learned a bunch!

The day started with about an hour in his 100 year old barn going over the particulars of shooting long range. Jason covered a lot of stuff pretty quickly and thoroughly, answered all of our questions and debunked some myths out there in the area of precision shooting. We then walked to his range, zeroed our rifles and began to shoot.

Jason split his time between calling our shots and correcting our form. Keep in mind that the two doofuses who he was working with had never shot anything past 300 yards, and that 300 yd shot was only once. We knew nothing.

We both walked away after making multiple shots at 800yds with our own rifles and the confidence to shoot much farther than we thought possible. Will I shoot at a trophy elk at 800 yds next week? NO! Will I put into practice the techniques and knowledge that I picked up and shoot confidently at distances farther than before? YES! Will I practice more? Yes. Am I better than I was before I went there? Absolutely yes.

I wanted to go to his class because I've been trained on a lot of stuff that I never do, however I've never been trained on one thing that I do do...shoot. I feel a responsibility to make a good shot on an animal when I make the decision to do so and the stuff that he taught me will help me to do just that, and he does this at a bargain price.

I took my son and we went through Jason's class in November. Pretty much same situation as you for me (never had any formal training). My boy is 11 and I wanted to get him a good baseline for shooting. Jason did great with both of us and I am thankful for his training. Would reccomend him to anyone. I see Jason has a post in the classifieds but I still cannot post there being new.

The best scope built for the task was the one Scott brought, a Leupold MK 4, Mil reticle, MOA turrets. Sooooo, I made sure and explain both Mils and MOA. The best rifle brought out was Kevin's Kimber, but we couldn't mount the 30mm tube MK 4 onto the Kimber, because we didn't have the bases matching on all rifles. Kevin and Scott shot a Savage Axis with a 7 pound trigger (I later tuned down as far as possible) with a Leupold Mark 4, and Chad's bulk match 308 with 178 A-maxes. The rifle was purchased for less than $300 and was wearing a, one point in time, sure enough high end Sniper grade scope, shooting ammo not even tuned for that particular rifle. Boy howdy did I have some factors running through my head. But we got it done. Still, to date, EVERYONE has hit every target from 200 to 800 yards. Even with a $269 rifle.

Maybe for the next class or competition, have people provide a load of fill dirt instead of cash money...

Bout August, when that waterway is all dried out I'll be digging some dirt out of it to fill in the "road" on the range.

Might be a lesson in that fact alone.

I keep telling my friends is that if I learned only one thing there it is that rifle really doesn't matter, most of them are pretty good these days. The glass is what matters.

I realize that's not always exactly accurate, however it was for us.

I wish I knew five years ago what I do today. I get to re-buy a bunch of stuff now. My advice to anyone who is as similarly clueless as I was, take this class, go home and then buy your crap. I'd have saved a TON of money if I'd have done it in that order.

Best $300 I've ever spent outta my hunting budget.

Only $300...that's a deal! I'm not into the long range discipline, but man that's worth taking.

As I explain to everyone. I am not trying to make everyone a long range rifleman. But when you learn what it takes to hit out to 800 yards, 400 yards doesn't seem like a big deal. Watching that plate swing at nearly a half mile out is a big confidence builder in your abilities at medium and close range.

Same reason I shoot arrows from 60 yards, to drive home the fundamentals. Then 20 and 30 aren't so tough.
