If you were building a SA custom in something other than 6.5mm with a non mag boltface which would you choose? Assuming ammo availability wasn't an issue and used for Texas deer and long range plinking.

I voted other. As I am currently having a 7-08 built for dual purpose.

Voted for the .22 Creedmoor because of the "cool" factor

6mm creed for me as I'd want it to handle mulies and sheep as well. 22 creed is very tempting though.

6mm-284, the caveat being ammo is no issue being a handloader. You can get as much powder under a bullet with this cartridge as I think is pratical. YMMV.

I voted 6 creed because the 105 hybrid around 3k fps is about as good as it gets imho.

I voted other as I feel like my 7mm-08AI serves very well in this role. A 162gr Amax at 2812fps is some stout medicine. That being said I am also building a 6mm Creedmoor to play around with but won't have a full opinion for a few months.

Since I am always behind what the KoolKids are doing..for a long range plinker I'd build a 280AI VT style something...and bang 4 footed stuff as far as I could see them with appropriate for critter sized bullets.

I voted OTHER, I can't buy those at Walmart, and I am very forgetful, so Walmart is important

Of that list the 22 Creedmoor, fun pushing a 22 pill at high velocity. But for it to really shine go with a 1:7 twist and push the Berger 90gr bullets fast. But still will do good with the Swift 75gr Sirocco for popping game at a distance from a light recoiling rifle.

Could do a 224TTH and have a little more room for powder bolt

That's quite the bada$$ in a short action.

Got a couple I never considered coming out of the woodworks here. Never heard of the 6mm-284, necked down .280 rem? do you have to fireform brass for the 7mm-08AI?

Dee has a 7mm-08 AI. Good round that has to be fire formed but that is easy to do, the case stretch is very little.

RiverRider has a 6mm-284 IRRC. About as much powder as is useful in a 6mm and still fits in a short action. It is a necked down 284 Winchester, but easiest way is to neck down a 6.5-284 Norma which in itself is a good gun but really needs a long action for best results.

The 6-284 the .284 Winchester necked down to 6mm. Best way to go is use 6.5-284 (another derivative of the .284) brass and neck it down, not a problem. I get 3350 fps with a 95-grain Nosler Partition. I'd say it's probably good to 400 if I do my part. I could screw around with high-BC bullets but see no point in doing so.

For 7mm-08 AI, you'd need to fireform brass but that's no big deal really.

Kmon posted as I was composing my reply. He's right about action length with the 6-284, if you're using a longer action you can take advantage of the .284's capacity (almost equal to the .30-06) to a greater extent...but even if you're using a short action you'll still get more than out of other cartridges. It's a fatter case, kinda like the beltless magnums. Same bolt face though on account of the rebated rim.

I have a 6.5 SLR Improved and it hammers.

If you handload which I assume you do, then no reason not to do the 6 SLR if you don't care about cost, I'd improve it too. It's the best of the 6x47, 6 Creed and 243.

I wish I could have ran the Amax down at the match but I'm not sure it would have been fully stabilized given the 500ft elevation drop. I know my twist is great for the 168 but that 162 is a finicky sucker in a 1:10 twist.

Dee, if you were to run a 9 something twist in that 7-08Ackley would that cure the elevation ? you mentioned?? I'd really like to run 120's & 140's in a 7mm & don't see the need to feed a Magnum for my under 4-500 self imposed limits, with no intentions of shooting steel as the rifle's primary use.

At some point within sight my T3 270 is gonna get a new tube & full dress overhaul, and I had about decided on a 280AI for sure... but the idea of getting your MV's is interesting in the 308 family case, since I've found where I can get a 9.3x62 T3 at a "normal" MSRP as the final club in the bag.
