I've been looking for an older 336 in .35 Remington. I'm having a hard time finding one in great, not good, condition. Having never owned a .35 rem., should I just settle for a 30-30 or will I be pleasantly surprised at the load difference? Thanks

What is your intent for the gun? If you just gotta have a 35 rem I bet you wont be happy.

If you just want a neat old lever gun to hunt with I doubt you will ever notice its not a 35 rem except ammo is much easier and cheaper to find.

I want a good brush gun with a low power scope. I have a pre-64 model 94 in 30-30 and wanted another lever gun.

I wanted something to deliver more power than the 30-30. I'd like to stick with true rifle cartridges. 44 mag and 357 just don't do it for me.

I have the gun you describe. It packs noticeably more punch than a .30-30. I like it-especially for hogs.

I owned a Remington 760 in .35 Rem for years. I loved it and passed it on to my grandfather. It was a good cartridge in heavy brush. I never felt "under-gunned" when hunting whitetail with it. Most of my shots were in East Texas brush and under 100 yds with open sights.

It is a great cartridge and the 336 is the longest run of firearms chambered in it. If you rely on factory ammo it could be an issue. Shelves & web sites been bare for some time, a year or better. I've always cast and handloaded for the cartridge to get a bit more performance out of the compact cartridge. I've owned two Marlin, a 336D & 336SC, still have the "D" which is a 336 based on the Guide Gun series. I also have one of the 3K Rem 600s chambered in the cartridge, wouldn't rid myself of it for anything! I had a Savage 170B pump chambered it and always will regret getting talked out of it. Last year, I bought a CVA Hunter single shot chambered in the cartridge and loved the rifle. A fellow that helps me quite a bit here on the ranch took a shine to it and I sure enough owe him more than that rifle cost for all he does around here so I stuck it in his truck.

Factory ammo is loaded to the SAAMI Spec, 35.0K PSI but you can bump that a bit in the Marlin. I push it a lot harder in the Rem 600.

I started to look through my files for this cartridge and came across this article to introduce my 35 Rem bullet. I had a business that sold bullet molds and in 2006, the 100 anniversary of the 35 Rem, I decided it needed a bullet to honor it's achievement: Ranch Dog’s Bullet for the 100 Year Hunter

I had a 336ER, chambered in 356 Win, but felt there was no real gain in the performance of the two cartridges so let it go. My "D" has killed a whole bunch of hogs...

Another vote for the 45-70. But the 30-30 is a fun lever action to shoot. Nothing wrong with it at all and it's one you can take for hogs, coyotes or deer and enjoy shooting. I've had one for a few years and probably always will. Ammo can be found just about anywhere ammo is sold. Can't go wrong with a 30-30. However, if you want to step it up a notch, the 45-70 is a lot of fun too. Not a bad kick at all. More of a push to the shoulder. 325 grain works like a charm for hogs. I really enjoy mine in the field. That was my step up lever action from my 30-30 and I don't regret it at all. Fun rifle.

38-55, 375 Winchester, 45-70 or 358 Winchester, 308 casing necked up to a 35 cal bullet.

nothing wrong with a 336 in a 35 Rem. For a short range thumper, more frontal diameter (fast energy transfer to target) on the 35 cal bullet than the 30-30 and does not have to be beefed up receiver like the 375 big bore Winchester or the others that rifle was chambered in, to contain 50k+ psi.

The 35 Remington has been getting the job done on deer and bear for longer than any forum member has been around and will be going for a long time to come.

I have a 35 Rem that someone gave me for a next to nothing. Only shot it a couple of times but it does kick a lot more than my 30-30. Finding ammunition can be a little problematic. I would feel a lot more comfortable with the 35 on something like a bear hunt than a 30-30. So yes I do think there is difference. My two cents.

Reason why the 35 are in good condition not great is everyone who has one hunts with it. 35 is my favorite under 100 yard round. I currently have a Remington model 141 chambered for it.

I used to have a 35 Remington and liked it, but let it go years ago. My thoughts are If you want one, I think that you should get one. If I were to look for another lever action, I would probably look at a 45-70. I currently have a 450 marlin that is quite the thumper for when Im in bear country.

There are 35 Remington barrels available for the small ring Mausers, the Swede for example. I've always thought that one of these light, handy bolt guns with butter-smooth actions would be very nice in that chambering. A great whitetail gun.

Next 336 Marlin I buy will be in 35 Remington.

Kind regards, charlesb

I'd like to have a .35 as well, don't know why. 1st firearm I ever bought on my own was a Marlin 30-30, 3 years ago i bought a used one in great shape, "JM" stamped and exactly like the 1st one I had. The few 35's I have ran across have been higher priced than I want one for. I probably would never shoot it, as I haven't shot the 30-30 I bought. Also like the 45-70, but same thing there.

Another vote for yes, you do want one. I have the exact gun you want and it is my favorite brush gun. I have a place in Oklahoma with big bodied deer, and just feel better with a little more knockdown in the heavy brush. I usually see 1 or 2 nice ones at the Tulsa gun show each year. The caliber is much more popular in areas where there are bears, and some of the vendors from that part of the country come to Tulsa.
