I am in the market to purchase some thermal and / or night vision gear. I want to get suggestions of the best combination of gear to purchase. I would want thermal for spotting while walking or driving,night vision for stalking and thermal for shooting. I really do not want to buy three devices. Can you stalk with thermal? I am trying to figure how to use two. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I would also like to know which brands and models you like. Flir vs armasight vs atn. OR others. Thanks in advance.

Why not use something like a handheld thermal for scanning/walking and a thermal scope for your rifle?

Can you effectively walk with thermal versus night vision? Depth perception? Visibility? That is the question. Thanks.

What kinda budget are you on?

Depth perception is an issue with all thermals, I spot and stalk with a clip-on as soon as I spot a pig or yote I clip the thermal in front of my optic.

But like mdmorrow said what kind of budget $$$$$$

Thermals play havoc on my eyesight and give me headaches if used to much. That is why I am trying to go with the X-Sight on my gun. I will always use Thermal to scan fields looking for hogs, just don't look through them for long periods of time.

No real budget. I will spend the money. I just want to optimize what I get. I want it to work well in the field. I hate getting things that do not really work. Thanks

I am settling on two new AR platforms. One with a flir thermal scope. One with nv. I will also get a flir handheld and two pvs 7 nv monoculars with helmets. That way I can hunt with one other person.

That should do it. Now I need to get some more land to hunt.

I use the FLIR RS 32 1x-5x with good success on my AR blk out. I do like the 1-9 a little better with the larger lens for better clarity.

How much you got to spend? I'm using a Thermal-Eye for spotting, PVS-14 for stalking and a Armasight Zeus thermal for shooting.

So the best thing to have is a PVS-14 helmet mounted for driving, walking in the dark, also for stalking close, a thermal for spotting and a thermal for shooting.

As for the PVS-7, covers both eyes, which will keep you somewhat from being blind in one eye when its time to shoot, but I like the PVS-14 on one eye, flip it up when time to shoot.

I too would take the 14 over the 7. When scanning with thermal with 7's you're constantly flipping them up and down. With a monocular on your non dominant eye you can scan and still leave your nv eye adjusted. Also have one eye uncovered and adjusted to the dark is helpful. If money is no object look into a psq-20. Tnvc can probably help you. It's a fusion (blended thermal and i2) monocular. Also, there are much better options than flir. Look into the new ir patrol and ir hunter line from ir defense. Do a bunch of research before you buy. It's a big investment and you'll be glad you bought right the first time around. ar15 .com has a dedicated nv forum that has a ton of good info.

I am a new guy on the block with a product called Digital Crosshairs. It is a digital night vision scope adapter that comes with an LCD display for targeting. Great for scanning, stalking, or sit an wait hunting. You talked about driving and scanning, be aware that thermal can't see through glass windows, digital IR can.




Not sure about digital, well the military is and all new Apache copter are using digital night vision, not thermal or Gen4

I am definitely switching to the pvs 14. The help has been tremendous. I will get the gear week after next. Selling my 72 chevelle and all the money is going in the gear. I think it will be more fun. Anyone need a car? Thanks

Call Vic at TNVC he'll take care of you one the 14. UNV on here can take care of you on the thermal. You should also look into some IR lasers for shooting.

I settled on 3 IR Defense MK IIs and 2 PVS 14s. I am using on of the MK's for spotting. The MKs are awesome. Thanks for the help on the forum.
