In September I planted 4 acres of winter oats and Austrian winter peas. Both still green, and deer hitting both hard. My question is when do I plow them under. Do I do it as soon as everything starts greening up, or do I wait until May or what, I have never done this before. Any and all help is appreciated.

Ours have already made the change.. finally running out of acorns, and the oats are starting to get rust on them... great time of year to see most of your deer since they will be hitting the pastures hard looking for clover and other forbs

what I have done in the past was to shred (mow) in early August, then plow under mid August to compost. Then plow and plant in late Sept. to early Oct. right before a cold wet front comes thru.

If you don't need to field, that is the best way. If it seeds out, you get a bonus.

Thanks Dennis, I don't need the field at all. Do you spray to kill it before you plow it up?

great tool to use during the season too... keeps fresh growth present when the oats start getting tough.

I never have. Only time I have used chemicals was for my hay fields. For food plot, I do the same as PMK does, in August when It's hot, disking will generally kill most growing plants, then I will disk again before planting my fall plot. When I disc, I do it all one direction, then again, crossing over the 1st the opposite direction, that gets near everything. If I am leaving the seed for birds, I will just disc right before planting, but you will still get a small amount of germination.

Leaving a thick cover on it, draws in bugs, which will feed birds ( young turkey and quail )

If the field is really tall and thick though, I will definitely shred it and disc in August.

For food plots that I only plant in the fall I use a mix of small grains and clovers. I use a mix of clovers that will continue to grow on into the summer months long after the small grains have gone to seed. This way I get production till August when I plow them to start over.

Once a grain seeds it's done. Deer utilization and plant growth stops. Legumes are different. They will keep producing as long as they have soil moisture, and fair weather.

Lack of Rainfall, freeze and over utilization are what usually gets legumes. Oh and plagues via insects

Yelp but as long as you have moisture they tend to make it.. Key being moisture and we all know how that tends to work bang

Not all of them will live though either no matter how much rain you get...winter pea varities, some vetches, some clovers(burr for example) etc are cool season only down south, they are gone by spring.

Yes it started around 4-5 this morning with light/steady rain then a few better shower and now just light drizzle. Cool today with high of 43 so far. I would guess around an 1" today.

Since late October rains have been really good and setting the spring look better than last year. I just hope it keeps it up. How is your area this year?

Good deal. Had the same system pass through and caught just under eight tenths on the Migl gauge. Haven't checked the stx deluxe gauge in the garden yet.

I have 2 on this place and they hardly ever show the same amount of rain. Never get a good general rain anymore over a large area.
