So I have these 3 rifles and three scopes on my bench right now. Two are old bolts I've shot for a long time. Took them both apart to get them barrels threaded. The third is a LR308. Trying to decide which of my scopes to put on which rifle so I could use some input. New scopes are not an option. I primarily hunt but would like to eventually get into long range shooting.

One rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard 308 heavy barrel, stock trigger, B&C stock. The second one was a stock Rem 700 7 mag ADL. It's being converted to a DM BDL with timney trigger and full aluminum bedded Hogue stock. The third gun is a new DPMS LR308 in .308.

Now for the scopes. Two of them are identical older Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50 with 1" tubes. Bought one new, the other came with the 308 in a trade. The third scope is a new Vortex HS-LR 4-16x50 dhBDC with a 30mm tube. Currently that is on the LR308 with a QD ring mount.

In order to swap the scopes around, that would mean 2 sets of new rings due to tube sizes and the QD mount. Right now the 2 bolts have the Leupolds and the LR308 has the Vortex. Was thinking of putting the Vortex on the 7 mag.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Sounds like your focus is on the 7mag, since you are doing the most work on it. Put the best scope on it, imo.

The 7 mag is getting the most work right now, but that's mostly because it's been stock for way too long. Stock 6 lb trigger and synthetic stock without a free floating barrel so that stuff needed to be changed.

I'd put the Vortex on the 7 Mag. The 30mm tube may buy you a little more internal adjustment that the 7 mag could put to use at practical ranges for that caliber but would be stretching a bit for the .308's. Just me, though. Compare available internal adjustments before taking this to the bank, though.
